Senior Living in The Midst of COVID-19

The face of senior living has changed immensely due to COVID-19. And although some of these changes have been difficult, faith-based senior living community, The Village of St. Edward is taking the necessary steps to ensure that these changes don't disturb the livelihood of the residents at their three Northeast Ohio campuses.

The Village's Director of Admissions and Marketing, Mindy Keller, explains: "We follow the guidelines set by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and the Ohio Department of Health (ODH).

Fortunately, this has only been a minor hiccup. The Village is able to offer virtual tours of all three campuses. "We've had to be very creative on how we can help people see our campuses and buildings without actually having them come inside," Mindy says. "It's been important for us to be able to offer these tours because we want everyone to know that even though there is a pandemic, that doesn't necessarily mean it's a bad time to move into one of our independent living, assisted living or memory care facilities."

The Villiage's three campuses are Wadsworth, Fairlawn and Green. Fairlawn was their first campus and opened in 1964 as the St. Edward Nursing Home for the Aged in Fairlawn, offering 24/7 nursing care. Over the years, the need for a facility that offered assisted and independent living became evident, 150 apartments were added to the Fairlawn campus in 1989-1990 followed by 28 memory care units in 2017..

Today, the Fairlawn campus continues to offer nursing care as well as independent living, assisted living and memory care services and accommodations. The Wadsworth and Green locations opened in 2019; both offering independent living, assisted living and memory care services and accomodations.

Each campus strives to provide care that honors the sacredness of life and protects the dignity of each resident. Additionally, The Village's overarching mission is to provide a continuum of care and they remain adamantly not for profit. This means that their residents can move through each level of care – independent living, assisted living and memory care – instead of having to search for a new facility as they age. The Village also offers a Benevolence Program so that residents are never asked to leave because of finances.

"Our goal is to provide a safe and secure community," says Annette Walters, The Village's Corporate Director of Marketing. "Even in the midst of COVID-19, we want the residents and their loved ones to know that we will continue to do what is needed to keep our residents safe, active and engaged."

"At the beginning of the pandemic, visitors were not permitted," explains Mindy. "But we have recently started allowing residents to meet with their friends and family members outside. We also do FaceTime and Zoom calls with the residents and their family members."

"We are here to inspire joyful aging," says Mindy. "I always tell people, 'Don't wait until you or a family member needs assisted living services. The independent living accommodations that we offer provides support that helps each resident age gracefully.'"
