Keating Woodworks

Sustainably Designed + Built Furniture

Geoffrey Keating is a fifth-generation Colorado Springs furniture maker who has tucked his workshop into the main level portion of an Old North End house. Everything about it feels welcoming in the sort of way that encourages us to use phrases like “the art of living slow.” During the morning, natural light pours in from floor-to-ceiling windows and just through the back door is the most idyllic shake-cottage offering just a glimpse of its texture, prompting a taste for more.

The ambiance of the space sets the scene for the masterful craftsmanship that takes place at the hands of Geoffrey Keating. His pieces are classic, warm, exclusive, timeless.

Sustainability

When Geoffrey speaks of his processes, the inclusion of sustainability is naturally woven into the threads of conversation. Long before it was mainstream to consider using sustainably grown product, this has been a weighty part his protocol. Investing in the extra cost and the time to dig for the rare mill that offered FAC (following another crop) harvested wood is trendy feat for the ethics of his company.

It’s a part of the lengthy process of ensuring quality in the final product. This process has grown easier as access to this category of wood is more readily available now than when he first began 12 years ago. But sustainability isn’t only considered on the product level.

Better quality wood contributes to the lasting effect of his furniture, however, the design also plays into his sustainability efforts. When pieces can last generations in durability, but only fit the look of today, it’s counterproductive. Geoffrey’s pieces aren’t created to fit into a trend or to only last in one home, but to be heirloom pieces for generations.

Quality + Beauty

As an old home built during the early days Colorado Springs still stands with character and is sought after by many locals and those trickling in, Keating Woodworks' furniture incubates a similar attraction for quality and beauty to be nestled into one’s home.

Geoffrey’s process of conceptualization to finalization is a meticulous and intentional. While production of an ordered piece takes just 2-3 weeks of proper woodwork, it can take more than a year to develop a piece worthy of a permanent spot in the Keating collection. After drawing inspiration from something as simple as an illustration in a child’s book, Geoffrey reimagines the piece in his mind, draws sketches, finds pieces from his scrap pile to make a prototype and works the piece until it’s just right.

This is part of what creates a connection between his furniture and his clientele. After all, a Keating piece is as beautiful as it is useful.
