Mayor's Message

Frisco City Council Members Set Top 10 Projects For 2021

Ten priorities were identified and evaluated during the Frisco city council's annual winter work session, which is a review of what went well in the past year, what didn't and what strategic goals are needed for the city's future. Mayor Jeff Cheney shares a summary of that session, as compiled by Mayor Pro-Tem Will Sowell.

2021 Frisco's Top 10 Strategic Goals (not in any priority order):

  1. Grand Park Master Planning: Grand Park has added 175-plus acres, making it larger than Central Park in NYC. It now can be reimagined as an immense, anchoring suburban park and trail.
  2. Performance Arts Center:  City officials remain committed to working with partners at Frisco ISD and Hall Park to develop a world-class performing arts facility. Formal agreements are still being finalized.
  3. Develop Reinvestment Strategy:  Frisco is becoming an older suburb with a mix of new and exciting locations and some areas of the city planned before its current success we have had. Reinvesting in older sections ensures that the entire city remains well maintained and vibrant.
  4. Venture Capital Growth:  There's an outstanding talent pool of people in Frisco. The vision is for Frisco to be a growing center of innovation, attracting new jobs and future start-ups.
  5. World Cup 2026:  The Dallas region is a finalist to host the 2026 World Cup. Frisco representatives want to host a team or perhaps even other roles, to showcase the city. The following year, Frisco will host the PGA Championship.
  6. Traffic Reinvestment:  Everyone must keep focused on improving traffic in Frisco, through a combination of road improvements, new roads, signal improvement and embracing new technologies.
  7. Trail Connectivity:  Frisco has a growing network of hiking and biking trails, but a plan to better inform residents on how to connect to these trails through residential areas without having to travel on major thoroughfares is needed. Participants agreed Plano serves as a solid model in this area.
  8. Entertainment Districts:  One reason that residents leave Frisco is for entertainment districts (think Legacy West or Grandscape). The city must do a better job of ensuring vibrant entertainment districts locally.
  9. Bring Tourism Back:  Tourism is very important to Frisco; soon people will begin to travel again. It may not be like before but there's an opportunity for Frisco as a suburban area to attract visitors to accelerate the city's economic recovery.
  10. State Legislative Strategy:  Texas legislators only meet every other year so it's important for Frisco to have a strategy to ensure the city is actively engaged with them to advocate for the desires of residents.
