Have Books, Will Travel

Douglas County Libraries Offers Three Selections to Take You Away in Spirit

It’s a brand-new year! And while we may be done with 2020, it might not be done with us. There’s a saying that goes “when the world’s on a timeout, books are there for you.” Never has that been more true than during the last year. Books turned out to be a great antidote to our challenging reality, and they continue to be.

People turn to books for many reasons. The great thing about them is that you can always find one that speaks to you. Sometimes we want an excellent story or to inhabit a character or setting completely different from our own. Sometimes we’re looking for truth, or we want to learn something new or expand our experiences. And then sometimes we simply need a book to take us away—far, far away—so we can escape our present reality. These are those kinds of books.

Each of these reads will spirit you away—one to a bygone era when people came together in support of a cause, one on an epic and touching adventure around the world, and one that will take you out of your world entirely. Enjoy!

Andrea Wyant and Kate Prestwood are with the Collection Services team at Douglas County Libraries. Books have been their great escape since childhood, and now they are mostly smitten with audiobooks. One of Andrea’s favorites is “Daisy Jones and the Six” by Taylor Jenkins Reid, and a favorite of Kate’s is “Emergency Contact” by Mary H.K. Choi. As audiobook aficionados, they particularly fancy those read by Jim Dale.
