Elevate Your Skin Care Routine

When she was in middle school, Taylor Douthitt would watch Extreme Makeover and The Swan with her mother. “I was struck by the substantial impact plastic surgeons could have on the lives of their patients, by giving them the self-confidence to live their lives as they always dreamed,” Taylor says. “I realized that this incredible form of medicine was one I needed to practice.” After graduating from the University of Florida, Taylor attended graduate school to become a physician assistant. She graduated with a master’s degree in clinical medical science, then began training as an aesthetic injector.

Last year, in her fifth year of practicing medical aesthetics, Taylor became part of the team at Elevated Dermatology in Parker, specializing in aesthetic injectables. “Dr. Chris and Dr. Kate Messana have built an incredible practice centered on evidence-based medicine, compassion, and a drive to give the highest level of care possible,” Taylor says. “The values of Dr. Kate, head of the cosmetic branch of Elevated Dermatology, aligned with mine in such a symbiotic way. I was immediately drawn to the practice and knew I had to join. Dr. Kate’s knowledge of lasers and light therapy drew me to the practice as well, as I firmly believe they are an integral part of both aging gracefully and anti-aging.”

Taylor believes skincare and aesthetics should center around helping people feel confident in their own skin as well as achieving natural results delivered with a gentle touch. “Neither needs to be complicated, so finding the right aesthetic practitioner who aligns with your values is the best way to get the results you’re looking for,” Taylor says. “My philosophy revolves around using a multi-directional approach to anti-aging. For example, a laser session and a Sculptra session per year, as well as a solid daily skincare regimen, is a great base regimen to either stick with or build from.”

But what does a “solid daily skincare regimen” mean? “There is a difference between dermatologist-recommended skincare and influencer-recommended skincare,” Taylor warns. “Experts are experts for a reason, and simply using Google to make ‘informed’ decisions may work for some, but not all. It is important to learn from reliable, verifiable sources. There is a lot of amazing non-medical-grade skincare out there, and I use numerous products; however, there are also a lot of scams that are taking your money and potentially hurting you and your skin.”

Taylor says there is a common misconception that professional skincare is overly irritating and most people can’t tolerate it. “Yes, ingredients like tretinoin can be irritating to some skin types, but there are ways of improving tolerance for most people,” Taylor explains. For example, she advises making sure skincare products are used properly, such as using a pea-size amount on completely dry skin and increasing hydrators to compensate for the drying effect. “Tretinoin should also be gradually incorporated into your skincare routine and not used with other active ingredients in the beginning, to improve tolerance,” Taylor adds.

It's probably no surprise that the most common concern Taylor hears from her patients is the aging process and how it is affecting their appearance over time—after all, we all want to look our best. “It can be overwhelming and disconcerting to approach anti-aging due to the sheer volume of products, treatments, and information currently available,” Taylor says. “There are a few staple treatments that can be incorporated over time to age gracefully, and I am happy to tailor those to my patient's needs. Dr. Kate and I agree the best anti-aging injectable is Sculptra, which causes your body to build collagen that is lost at around 1–2 percent each year. This product develops natural, soft volume and gives a beautiful, youthful appearance back to the face.”

Taylor says she’s excited about the growth in the field of skincare. “There is a lot of great skincare out there, and it’s more accessible than ever to the mass populace.” And more skincare brands are incorporating sun protection, peptides, vitamin C, and vitamin A derivatives, which Taylor says are all excellent anti-aging ingredients. “At Elevated Dermatology, we recently launched a new non-invasive treatment called the EmFace by BTL. Sticker pads are applied to the cheeks and forehead, which target the muscles used for browlift and facelift procedures, to cause a lifting and tightening effect through the lower face and brow. And the new injectable I am excited about is Juvederm Volux, which is being launched for the treatment of jawline contouring.”
