A Community of Care

Stories of Home from The Good Samaritan Society’s Loveland Village

When Holly Turner was a little girl, she and her friends would play archeologists on a big plot of land near their homes. Hours were spent digging up ‘treasures’ and examining their worth. Years later, Holly returned to that land to reminisce. She noticed her archeological grounds had been repurposed. In their place stood a Senior Housing organization called The Good Samaritan Society (GSS).

Now Holly sits on those grounds in an open office known for its large windows. As the Manager of Senior Living, Holly waves to her residents through the glass and remains accessible throughout the day for any concerns or conversations that come her way.

Though Holly’s story has some nuance to it, it’s typical for people to stick around Good Samaritan for many years. The GSS offers a full range of housing and healthcare services for those 55 and older, which means that residents can stay with the organization as they age and come to require different levels of care. Though there are several branches across the United States, the Loveland Village location includes 80 duplexes, 103 senior care apartments, 51 assisted living accommodations, and 104 licensed care beds for post-acute care and memory care.

Pam Webb, the Marketing Specialist at Loveland Village, says that approachability is the quality that makes the GSS feel like home.

“I just feel like we’re a big family,” she says. “Our doors are open everywhere on the campus, so nobody needs to make an appointment.”

Both Pam and Holly take ownership over the relationships they form with residents and look for opportunities to invest in their lives. Holly calls herself a navigator because she helps people navigate the intricacies that the latter-end of life holds. Since the organization is faith-based, the staff has the freedom to pray and spiritually encourage residents.

“Many times, residents or their adult children will really struggle with the aging process and what goes along with that,” Pam says. “Sometimes, they’re in tears and don’t know what to do. I love that I can stop what I’m doing and ask to pray with them.”

The level of ownership doesn’t stop there. Pam and Holly, like many other members of the GSS staff, have older family members who live on the property. There’s often a stigma when it comes to different forms of retirement homes. According to Pam, people are hesitant to surrender their independence and accept that they are getting older.

“We help get people to the place where they understand that it’s okay to get a little help. Maybe they would thrive even better in our community than in their own home,” Pam says.

With all of the amenities and services the GSS offers, Pam’s statement isn’t hard to believe. Residents have access to a fully stocked library, a quaint general store, a game room, fitness opportunities, and a woodshop, to name a few. There are multiple avenues designed with the intention to foster care and community.

“People walk through our doors and say, “It’s magical here.” There’s an aura that I haven’t felt in many other places before,” Holly says.
