The Dow

With its brand new back patio and plenty of space indoors, The Dow should be your new summer hangout.

Established in 2017, The Dow makes up Dick O’Dows Irish Public House’s next chapter. It’s a reimagination of 1,800 square feet of Dick’s with a garage door rising to bring the outside in under 30-foot ceilings.

Also, brand new this summer, customers can enjoy a 30-seat back patio that, according to owner Mitch Black, “will quickly become your favorite spot this summer.”

At The Dow, the price of beer fluctuates every 15 minutes with supply and demand. The more customers drink a certain type of beer, the more prices increase; at the same time though, the cost of the beers customers are not drinking as much will drop. Black has shared in the past that prices really only fluctuate a quarter or two, and visitors should expect to see a selection of limited run and hard-to-find beers.

Designed to complement one of the 40 unique beers on tap daily, The Dow’s fresh menu includes a variety of shareable plates:

  • Beef Tenderloin, Pork Belly or Ahi Tuna Sliders

  • Crab Cakes over a bed of Roasted Corn Maque Choux

  • Chicken Flautas, deep fried and served with salsa

  • Traditional and Chicken Pesto Flatbreads

  • Smoked Salmon Rolls, garnished with a garden pickle and caper relish

  • Garlic Parmesan or Sweet Potato Waffle Fries

  • Mango Habanero Wings served with pickled vegetables

  • And, castelvetrano olive tapenade, hummus, marinated tomatoes and sesame flatbread, also known as the Mezze Plate

After the coronavirus outbreak this spring, The Dow will look and feel a bit different than it has in the past, including the probability of a smaller menu for a while. Luckily, though, the restaurant certainly has the room.

“There’s not really any space like it in Birmingham as there is just so much of it,” Black said in May. “Even with a 50-percent occupancy, we are still able to effectively keep our seats and tables six feet apart and, in some cases, even more. We’ve also implemented many ways to keep those who work here as comfortable and safe as possible, as well.”

Black is encouraging the community to come together as local restaurants and pubs need everybody’s help more than ever.

“Try to eat local, drink local and keep in the forefront to support the people who have been supporting you all these years,” he said.

The Dow is located behind Dick O’Dows in the Willits Alley at 160 W. Maple. For more information about The Dow or the well-known Dick O’Dows, visit thedowbirmingham.com or dickodowspub.com.
