Birmingham Design Studio

Giving customers what they want with a quality product has given the studio the longevity to survive and thrive

Can you say rugs, high-end furniture and fine art?

You’ll find all that and more at the Birmingham Design Studio located at: 808 South Old Woodward Avenue. I recently had the pleasure of interviewing owners Kristi and Kamran Karimpour over Zoom and relished the chance to talk to this talented and motivated couple. They run a one-stop shop when it comes to exceptional quality design. Not only do they carry rugs from every country and origin, but the materials and craftsmanship are extraordinary along with the exceptional service that Kristi and her design team provide.

"What," I asked Kamran early in our interview, "is the key to staying in business for more than 30 years?" He replied with a smile filled with pride, "Giving customers what they want with a quality product has given the studio the longevity to survive and thrive for all these decades."

It’s more than obvious that the Karimpours have connected with their clientele, forming lasting and close-knit ties that make customers return over and over again. What makes the Karimpours especially stand out is the personal care they provide. Kamran told me how they will bring a rug over to a client’s house or place of business and put it into the room so they can see exactly how it goes with the existing lighting and colors and ensure that it is the best possible choice for the space. If it’s not perfect, they go back to the drawing board to help their customers pick something else that works. That personal touch is not something you can get through online shopping!

When decorating a room, many people buy their furniture first and then select a rug. But the Karimpours recommend taking the exact opposite approach. Choose the rug first, they say, because that way it’s much easier to buy furniture and pick out complementary fabrics. However, if you’d rather get the furniture first (or already own it), they will still go above and beyond to find the perfect rug for any room and any budget.

What stood out most for me was Kamran’s back story of how he got involved in the rug business. After graduating from college, he took a corporate position but one day needed to help out his brother-in-law with selling his rug collection. From that day on, his destiny basically found him and he organically transitioned into the rug business. Having immigrated to the U.S. 43 years ago, he certainly wasn’t a stranger to hard work and fighting for the American dream. With their passion for rugs, designs, culture and history, the Karimpours offer a full-service design studio with all the resources available to help create the perfect room on every level. Customers always know they are in the best of hands.

Private appointments, after-hour visits and video calls on Zoom or FaceTime are all available. The showroom is consistently professionally cleaned and masks are always required.

Looking to spruce up your home or office? Come visit the Karimpours and get to know this amazing family-owned business.
