DIY Mantel Garland

A Fun & Creative Decoration

It’s February, the holidays are over, spring isn’t here yet, and sometimes we are prone to the
winter blues. I have an activity that everyone can get in on, can brighten your home, and you
only need 2 items.

I was at my friend Mary' s beautiful home in historicPhoenix, AZ.  She has several fireplaces and one of our projects was to decorate one of her mantels in her home. I told her I was going to decorate it with coffee filters and a strand of lights. I don't think they really believed me, but I really meant it. I joked and called it my MacGyver mantel garland. This is a standing joke because Mary once said I could make a coffee table out
of a car engine. I told her since my dad owns a body shop, I probably really could do that and told her how. “Find an unusual object? Chas will quickly come up with 100 uses for it.

I started by laying a strand of lights across the mantel. If you're worried about the strand of lights staying on, add a Command Hook to either side of your mantel on top, and hook your lights into place. This will help hold your lights into place so they don’t fall off and take all your decorations with them. I pressed in the center of the coffee filter, and twisted the bottom like in the picture. I placed the coffee filter in between the wiring. I continued doing this all the way across the mantel and down the sides. On top I filled in extra filters around to fill in the space.

This project was quick, easy and it only took 1 package of coffee filters, one strand of lights.  “The coffee filters look like a string of petticoats. How beautiful would this be in a girl’s room? I’m not sure you can dye
coffee filters but I’m imagining pink ones like a ballerina’s tutu. This garland also reminds me
of a feather boa~with all its simplicity but impact.” Mary said when the project was complete.

This DIY garland could be easily adjusted by using brown, non- bleached coffee filters as well. Perhaps you want to do this project in the spring or summer. You can spray the white coffee filters with a mixture of water and food
coloring, and let them dry. Re-create this coffee filter mantel garland using your own creative ideas, perhaps even incorporate dried flowers from Wild Blossoms Studio!
