A Basement Remodeled for Family Fun

This Award Winning Project by Michael Nash Design Build Keeps the Family at Home for All Occasions

Owners of a single family home in Vienna tired of their basic builder-grade, unfinished basement. The couple had a desire for a much-needed entertaining space, an in-home office, an au-pair suite, a renovated bathroom, a large scale bar/kitchenette area, and a dry Sauna. They brought in Michael Nash Design Build to create their dream environment.

"Working with unfinished space is always fun for us," says Sonny Nazemian, master designer/remodeler at Michael Nash Design Build. "We basically have a blank slate to create exactly what the homeowner has envisioned."

That being said, to make adequate floor space and an open living area, the team had to relocate the furnace and hot water heater to a new utility room and add beams to eliminate steel support structures. Then it was off to the races.

The main living space is the highlight of the space. Large-scale porcelain tile was laid throughout and a large kitchenette/bar area was placed in one corner that features an espresso machine, a 36" refrigerator, microwave, sink and dishwasher. A bar-stool seating area under three beautiful antique pendant lights looks toward glass-fronted cabinetry that displays liquor for entertainment.

Another highlight feature is the see through fireplace mounted in the stone-veneer wall separating the bar area from the sitting area where the entire family and guests can watch the large screen television or play arcade games and foosball. The children call it their new "airy and fun space."

"We decided to open up the single doorway to outside back patio with a double French door," says Sonny. "This coupled with the indoor direct and indirect lighting and the natural light colors we chose for the floor and golden honey ledgestone accents on the walls and kitchen backsplash creates an extremely bright area that doesn't seem at all like a basement."

The space to left of staircase coming from main level was turned into an office, and a new bedroom and bath was added as an au pair suite. The bathroom features a walk-in shower with a pebble floor and a stone and dark-cafe vanity. One of the most unique features of this remodel is the custom-made sauna that was fit into the wall behind the bathroom, so the homeowners can relax after a hard work day.
