Elements of Outdoor Living

This is the Year to Finally Develop a Spectacular Outdoor Living Space for Your Home. Boiler Creek Design + Build Offers Tips on What to Keep in Mind

It’s March, and many of us are already dreaming of spring and summer fun. Since the valley may likely still be facing Covid-19 restrictions for at least the next several months, homeowners are continuing to explore creative ways to make the most of time at home.

“Right now we’re seeing that people want to reimagine how they enjoy time outdoors in their own yards,” says Trevor French, owner of Boiler Creek Design + Build in New Castle. “Spring is the season to get started on outdoor projects.”

Boiler Creek specializes in custom outdoor living spaces, including everything from decks and pergolas to porch fireplaces and outdoor kitchens. Particularly over the past year, French has noticed a trend in how locals are investing in their property.

“Since Covid started taking off last year, people have been focusing on really putting money back into their homes,” he says. “We’re probably going to be isolating to some degree for the better part of 2021, and not going out as much. Having a nice place to be with your family and close friends outside during the summer months can help make things a little easier.”

French and his team place a high value on professional integrity and client relationships, with a strong focus on pre-construction.

“We do that to be able to have everything ready when the build starts, so it can just flow,” he says. “We like to dial in the process and materials before we go in. It’s important for the homeowner to know exactly what they want beforehand so they don’t feel pressured to make decisions later on.”

With that in mind, French helps his clients not only choose the right designs and finishes, but aids in their understanding of the big picture. Read on to learn about his four elements of great outdoor living spaces, and call 970.618.3461 or email Trevor@BoilerCreek.com to get in touch.

  1. Room to entertain is key. Spaces should be designed with maximum seating in mind, meaning comfortably accommodating at least six people in smaller spaces and eight or more in larger areas. Rock benches combined with traditional patio seating can make a nice functional touch, and building a new deck (or redesigning an old one) can help add life and seating options to the back yard. And don’t forget shade! A deck covering, pergola, or fabric shade are great choices.

  2. Cooking space is essential. The top way to enhance an outdoor living space is to install a built-in kitchen. A stone veneer outdoor kitchen might include a grill, smoker, pizza oven, wet bar sink, trash receptacle, and mini fridge. These features make entertaining family and friends at your home easier and more exciting, expanding your options for outdoor cooking and dining. Although this option may not suit everyone’s budget, it’s a solid investment for giving your outdoor living space a more upscale feel.

  3. A heat source extends the fun. When summer is gone and the chill returns, your family can continue to enjoy time outside with a freestanding or built-in fire pit, tube heater under a covered deck, a chiminea, or some combination of these. Each provides necessary warmth while creating a cozy, inviting atmosphere—affording you the opportunity to get the most out of your outdoor space throughout the year.

  4. Landscaping is the icing on top.  When designed and installed to suit your specific home and yard, landscaping pulls everything together with a bow. Rock work, shrubbery, trees, and colorful plants add visual interest with some shade. A water feature can help bring additional coolness while capturing that feel of the great Colorado outdoors.
