Clear the Clutter

Feeling stressed and overwhelmed by all the stuff in your house? It might be time to hire a professional organizer.

Have you ever opened the door of a closet or the basement storage room and felt completely overwhelmed? Have you spent hours (or days) searching for something you know you own? Or bought something you already owned because you couldn’t find it (or forgot you had it)?

Spring is the perfect time to declutter. And the good news is, you don’t have to do it alone. Tiffany Haddad, a professional organizer and owner of The Closet Cleanse in Basalt, will come to your home, help you make decisions on what to donate, trash, or keep, and organize what’s left—leaving you feeling calm and in control.

How did you get into the home organization business?
I’ve always had an entrepreneurial spirit, so when my family and I moved here in 2017, I was ready to try something new. I like being my own boss, so during COVID, I thought, “What is it that I can offer the valley and the community that I'm not really seeing a lot of?” And it was in home organization. I used my background in mindfulness to help empower others to declutter their homes and find that sense of peace and calm in their own world.

So I created the LLC and started marketing myself with flyers and things like that. My name started getting out, and then it started becoming more of a referral-based business. I’m only in year two of the business and it's been growing. People seem to really need this.

All of us with our piles of stuff.
Oh my gosh, yes. One of my first concerns was, where is all this stuff going to go in this valley? How can we repurpose it?

Is that a big part of your process? Repurposing things?
Absolutely. And I do all of that—I take away like all donations, all trash, all the things that need to be consigned or sold. So it's not like I’m leaving you with a bunch stuff you need to get rid of. And I think that's a big part of why people like what I do. I take care of all of it so they don't have to worry about where it's going to go or having to haul it to the consignment shop or a thrift store.

That might be the hardest part of decluttering. Getting rid of everything.
It really is. I try to repurpose as much as I can without taking things to the landfill. But the Pitkin County landfill is great because they have a “drop and swap.” You can take things there, like a dresser or a pair of skis, and someone can just pick it up for free. Yeah. And we also have some nice consignment shops in the valley.

Talk a little bit about the process when someone calls and says, “I need help.”
Let’s say it's a master bedroom closet. I pull everything out—everything off the shelves, hangers, etc., and then I categorize. Things like shirts, shoes—down to high heels and boots and sandals—go into separate piles. Then the client and I go through each item and sort them as keep, donate, trash or consign. I ask questions like, “When was the last time you wore this? Are you going to wear it again?” If the answer is no, then we get rid of it. Then, I organize everything back into the closet so the client will have a system so they know things are.

Do you have some advice for someone who feels overwhelmed?
I always say start small. Start with your junk drawer. We all have one, and if you declutter a space that's small, it feels like a big accomplishment. And then you can work your way up and move to larger spaces. But also, it's okay to ask for help. You outsource for so many things, right? So, this is just another thing to outsource that can save you time and leaves you feeling less stressed.
