Partners of Western Colorado - Mentor Program

Time to Make a Difference

Children are great imitators and often times they are in need of the proper person in their lives to imitate. The children in our valley are no exception. Mesa County Partners knows just how important it is for our youth to have good role models in their lives and to have someone to look up to. Partners has been changing lives for the past 43 years by providing opportunities for the youth in our valley to have mentors. You may have heard of Mesa County Partners mentoring program. You may have even considered being a mentor but never seemed to find the time to get around to it. The good news is, there is still time to make a difference!

There is a large group of kids right here in Grand Junction who have been recommended to the Partners program by various medical professionals in the valley. By working with Partners, you can become a mentor that can help a special child in our community achieve their goals. Some of the youth in the program have goals such as learning to read better, learning to cook, getting better attendance at school, or learning how to fish, while some have other goals, such as staying out of the juvenile detention center or learning how to find a job. No matter the goals, each and every one of these children deserves the proper mentor to help seem them through.

As a mentor, Partners asks for 3 hours a week for a 1 year period. This does not mean finding an extra three hours a week. This means bringing a child along with you in your daily tasks. Your youth partner might want to join you at the gym, bake cookies, play a game of catch with you, or go with you while you are walking your dog. Other kids may be hoping to learn to sew or to ride a bike. At first, it may seem like a huge commitment but the best benefaction you can give a child is the gift of your time.

The process of becoming a mentor is simple. They will meet with the potential mentor as well as the child to see if they are a good fit for each other. For example, if you have horses they may partner you with a child who is interested in horses, or if you want a fishing buddy they can partner you with a youth who wants to learn to fish.

Currently, there are about 100 kids who are looking for positivity and influence in their lives. Some of these kids are still waiting on the perfect mentor; they are waiting for you!

Having a mentor not only changes the lives of these kids but will change your life as well. Are you ready to build a lifetime friendship?

If you or anyone you know is interested in being a mentor please give Mesa County Partners a call at 970-245-5555. They can get the process started right away!
