Moab Road-Trip

Mediterranean food in the desert

Ask any number of people in the Grand Valley what one of the best parts of the area is and they will likely mention the abundance of outdoor recreation. Lovers of the outdoors would not easily run out of trail options on the Colorado National Monument, Grand Mesa, or the Bookcliffs. Miles of biking trails snake along the river and the foothills of Fruita, and there are several points along the river to enter on a paddleboard, kayak, raft, or floating tube. It is one of the biggest draws to the valley – the amount of activities that can be enjoyed outside, and for those that don’t mind a few hours in a car the day trip possibilities from Grand Junction are even more epic. Just a few hours in any direction and Grand Valley locals have access to some of Colorado’s most beautiful mountain towns filled with high peaks, alpine lakes, and stunning mountain views. And with the closeness to the Utah border, Moab and two of Utah’s mighty 5 National Parks are just a few short hours as well. Roughly two hours on the road from Grand Junction and day-trippers can see sandy arch formations and deep canyons cut across the landscape. Moab hosts an excellent assortment of recreation to fulfill even the biggest outdoor enthusiast’s wishes.

As an avid traveler, another key in the choosing of day trip adventures is the food options. Many of Colorado’s mountain towns are hosts to some excellent restaurants and craft breweries and Moab is no different. The food scene has been steadily growing over the last few years, likely to accommodate the increase in visitors. But no complaints here! Variety is, after all, the spice of life. There is the Moab Brewery, several Mexican restaurants, cafes, and delectable bakeries. But the true hidden secret is the Sultan Mediterranean Grill. The menu is rich in traditional flavors and aromas that transport the guests out of the desert and straight to the Mediterranean. Hummus, tzatziki, falafel, babaganoush . . . all of the classics are expertly crafted to make the mouth water and the only problem to be found is that there are too many enticing options for one stomach to choose from. All the traditional dishes are available right down to the desserts and steaming Turkish coffee. The Mediterranean bowl, a dish packed with quinoa, avocado, beets, falafel, hummus, and stuffed grape leaves is a filling and nutritious meal that will satiate even those ravenous from a day of exploring the surrounding parks. It will replenish your body and your soul with a clear level of care the business puts into their food. While there are many food options in town, the Sultan Mediterranean Grill is both unique and extremely well done. It is a must-visit for any Grand Valley resident hoping to enjoy a unique day trip in Moab.
