Keeping care in the home

Service help adults remain in a familiar environment for as long as possible

Elizabeth Savage says taking care of others is simply a part of who she is, and she is currently using her care-giving skills at Home Instead Senior Care helping seniors remain in their homes for as long as possible.

“You give them the utmost respect,” Savage says. “They have taught me how to see the world a little bit different, and those are experiences you get to carry with you.”

Home Instead Senior Care opened in Lee’s Summit in 2004, and as the pandemic has especially impacted seniors and senior living facilities, many families are currently looking for ways to keep their loved ones in their own homes and out of facilities. As a result, Home Instead is especially busy now. As an essential service, they have been able to continue providing in-home care during the pandemic and are currently looking to expand their team of caregivers.

“We are looking for caregivers who can demonstrate kindness, dedication and reliability while building meaningful relationships with our clients,” said Terri Hrudka, recruitment coordinator. “You are going to have the opportunity to meet so many amazing people and the privilege to hear their life story. It is often unexpected how quickly you become attached to your clients and the meaningful bonds you will form.”

Overall, she says they are looking for caregivers who are willing to share their heart.

Savage particularly enjoys seeing client’s pictures in their homes and hearing stories about their families and experiences. She says each client is different, and it is not just the elderly who require care. Younger individuals with medical conditions and special needs often benefit from the service as well. The safety of her clients is her top priority, she says.

Caregivers are not required to have special skills. The requirements are that they must have a driver’s license, an insured and license vehicle, the ability to lift 25 pounds as well as submit to a criminal, driving record and drug screening. Additionally, they simply must enjoy working with seniors. Clients have a range of needs including light housekeeping, assistance with showering, toileting, transportation to doctor’s appointments and more.

Home Instead offers different levels and categories of care from providing personal services and companionship to Alzheimer’s and dementia care and hospice care support services. They work to match the needs of the client with the skills of the caregiver, and Hrudka says caregivers benefit from initial and on-going job training to strengthen and enhance their skills. Caregivers also enjoy flexible scheduling and the opportunity to meet new people and develop meaningful relationships, she says.

“As a dedicated caregiver, you help families restore balance, order and peace to their lives by helping their loved one remain at home,” Hrudka says.

Alana Titus with Home Instead says many people might not see themselves as caregivers until presented the opportunity. Caregivers have been vitally important this year to meeting needs during the pandemic and should be admired for what they do, she says.
