Style and Substance

Designer Shauna Ward's Weatherby Lake home is filled with functionality and charisma

Stepping into Shauna Ward’s home overlooking Weatherby Lake, you’d never think their family of five had only lived here for two years. The house, with its tall ceilings, expansive archways, built-in bars, welcoming fireplaces and huge windows with natural light, looks like it was built just the way it is now, with every room the peak of comfort and functionality, but also super stylish.

But it didn’t always look this way. Shauna and her husband, Ryan, purchased the home with its original 90s-era oak trim and cabinets, and after a contractor quit on them mid-reno — while they were living in a family member’s basement with two tweens and a brand new baby — Shauna stepped in, rescued the renovation and found her calling along the way. She’s now a home renovation consultant, specializing in design and project management with her business, Shauna Ward Interiors

Shauna’s personal style is like grown up-fun — funky-colored cabinets, lots of texture and splashes of color, but with elevated design details, like curated and thoughtful lighting and carefully considered storage details, like their enviable mudroom and its row of tall cabinets. It’s a little boho, but you just can’t say no to plants with natural light in a house like this, and Shauna can’t say no to a good rug, either (but should anyone?).

While her style is distinct, Shauna can adapt her design needs to any client’s taste, while still doing what she does best: bringing those attentive touches to make any space the peak of functionality and comfort, while also managing contractors.

“My goal is to make your dream house your dream house, not mine,” she says.

Shauna’s home is kid-friendly without all the plastic stuff, adapting to the wide range of ages of their children — Alexa, 12, Jenna, 9 and Rhett, 2. After taking over her home renovation, Shauna realized she loved this type of work and decided to leave her old career, even though she was in her 40s.

Though she says it’s a “late-in-life” transition, Shauna says she couldn’t have done this when her kids were younger, as a single mom who needed a traditional career with health insurance. Now, with more knowledge and stability, she’s proud to own her own business — one with flexible hours that can allow her the ability to be her own boss and be with her kids, a balance that any parent knows is hard to strike.

“It’s good for them to see that you can do this for yourself,” she says of her children.

It’s clear that Shauna loves a good project and doesn’t shy away from a challenge. It’s obvious she can whip any project into shape, while also lending her keen eye for mixing textures and patterns and making a house a home.
