Do Unto Others

Dr. Raye-Anne Ayo Focuses on Full-Scope Family Medicine

Some of Dr. Raye-Anne Ayo’s earliest childhood memories include being around a handful of doctors who treated her sister who was born with a congenital heart defect. A few of those doctors left a positive impression on Dr. Ayo, so much that she decided she wanted to be like them. She went on to earn a degree from Louisiana State University School of Medicine and completed her residency in family medicine at the University of Tennessee Medical Center.

“I tell my students, when they come in and don’t know what specialty they want to go into, that for me, family medicine was the rotation I didn’t hate,” she says, laughing. “I loved working with families and getting to know people, kids, adults, elderly - all kinds of people.”

Though working as a physician was fine for a while, Dr. Ayo realized the fast pace didn’t allow her to provide the care she wanted to. It was the business model that didn’t suit her, which is when she started thinking about how else her profession could look.

“I started Family Health Center in 2008. I started with no patients. I never wanted a phone tree. I wanted a real phone call. I didn’t want to wait three weeks to get results of a test,” she says. “I think that goes back to the Golden Rule - do unto others as you’d have done to you. You can’t go wrong with that.”

The Family Health Center is multifaceted. Not only can patients meet the needs of general health care - well visits, sick visits, vaccinations, diagnoses, allergy testing - but they can also receive aesthetic treatments, such as skin rejuvenation, laser hair removal, chemical peels, dermaplaning, and more. Patients can also have a no-scalpel vasectomy, vaginal rejuvenation, body contouring, and myriad healthy aging treatments.

Finally, Dr. Ayo offers Concierge Medicine, which is personalized health care through a membership plan. In essence, concierge medicine affords same-day or next-day appointments, 24/7 access to Dr. Ayo via her cell phone number, and longer and more in-depth appointments.

“I look at it as my job to give patients the information and to the best of my ability give them the best option for healthcare. I’m there either way, whether you take my advice or not. Aim for good, not perfect, because we’re human,” says Dr. Ayo. “You have to buy into your own healthcare. What are your goals? What do you want to do? I won’t be the person who prescribes something I don’t have evidence for.”
