From Sprint to Inspired

Neil Danville and his Johns Creek Crew Will Walk the Walk with GOCA on September 18

The Georgia Ovarian Cancer Alliance (GOCA) began its annual fundraising walk in 2002 and over the years it has been held at various locations across metro Atlanta.  In its inaugural year, the GOCA Walk was held at Centennial Park and has had many celebrated walk routes since then. Regardless of its location, the GOCA Walk, rebranded as the “Teal Trot” in 2014, has always been a hallmark fundraising, advocacy, and community empowerment event for GOCA and the ovarian cancer community. This year’s Teal Trot is being held at Chastain Park on September 18.

Teal is the color associated with the ovarian cancer community, and Chastain Park will be a sea of teal on September 18. There will be teal t-shirts sporting team names and walkers adorned with feather boas, sashes, banners, balloons, streamers and tiaras.

“As a former competitive sprinter and coming from a family of world class runners, my mom Sharon was an Olympic athlete, so the Teal Trot is a no brainer,” says Neil Danville. “It provides us with an opportunity to support an amazing cause, with amazing participants, and to push ourselves through sport while simultaneously raising money and supporting GOCA. It is imperative to come together as a community – there’s much strength to be had in numbers.”

Team Danville’s “love me back to life attitude” is reflected in their deep faith and their combined ability to make their faith and family the most important aspect of their lives. Over the years the family has grown in their walk with God tremendously. The Danville family mantra is one for us all to reflect on: “have faith and never ever give up – love ceaselessly and relentlessly. There is so much strength in caring with an ability to bring and help will others back to life through your actions.”

The Teal Trot is designed for walkers and runners at various paces. Whether you enjoy a casual walk or a competitive race, this survivor-forward event is intended to gather us in remembrance of those who are no longer with us, and also to honor and recognize women, their families, caregivers, and all who have all been affected by ovarian cancer.

“In my supporting role with my mother, my journey remains the same as it did on the first day we learned about her diagnosis,” says Neil. “My mom needs to always know how proud and blessed I am to be her son; and how I have learned more about life, love, strength, selflessness, and parenting that I will ever be able to express. God blessed me with a mentor, a role model, a hero, and an angel.”

The entire family has been involved with many of the GOCA fundraisers over the years. Remember to look for Sharon and her amazing family at this year’s Teal Trot and say hello!

Throughout its history the “Teal Trot,” Georgia’s largest ovarian cancer awareness event, has had over 25,000 participants and has raised 1.7 million dollars in support of the Georgia Ovarian Cancer Alliance’s mission of education and awareness throughout Georgia.
