Summertime is peak mosquito season, which means dousing yourself in pungent bug sprays and lighting citronella candles and tiki torches filled with fumes. If you'd rather take a more natural approach, try planting one or more of these plants, which repel mosquitos with their pleasant scents. In the article 12 Mosquito Repellent Plants from Garden Design, they share which plants will keep mosquitos away from your yard.

Lavender

Not only is lavender pretty, but its lovely fragrance keeps mosquitos away. It is a drought-resistant plant that requires full sun and good drainage.

Marigolds

Brightly colored marigold flowers are a beautiful and practical addition to any yard. Plant them in pots on your patio to keep pests at bay and/or plant them in your vegetable garden to deter insects from destroying your crops.

Citronella Grass

Citronella is known for its distinct scent, which repels mosquitos and is often used in commercial candles and oils burned in tiki torches. If you'd rather skip the chemical additives in these products, look for Cybopogon nardus or Citronella winterianus, true varieties of citronella grass to plant in your yard.

Catnip

Catnip is a member of the mint family that produces pale purple flowers. One study found that catnip is more effective at repelling mosquitos than DEET.
