It was all in the family when legendary TV producer Norman Lear visited with residents of University Village Thousand Oaks for a behind-the-scenes look at his career as one of the most successful television producers in Hollywood history. The mastermind behind such iconic sitcoms as “Sanford and Son,” “One Day at a Time,” “The Jeffersons,” “Good Times,” “Maude” and, of course, the series that started it all, “All in the Family,” Lear entertained a packed audience with personal stories and details of the creative process of developing hit TV shows.
The residents were also treated to a viewing of Lear’s new documentary, “Norman Lear: Just Another Version of You.” The film combines stories from his childhood and early career with his later success as a television trailblazer. Interviews with Rob Reiner and John Amos—who played two of Lear’s most memorable TV characters—as well as other celebrities, friends and family members add color, depth and humor to Lear’s life story.
Following the documentary, Lear enthusiastically answered questions from the audience about his career and political views. Lear is the founder of the advocacy organization People for the American Way and has supported First Amendment rights and causes for decades.
Lear’s stop at University Village was actually a return visit. Earlier this year, Lear and his production company filmed the pilot for his new television show, “Guess Who Died,” at the continuing care retirement community, where more than 80 University Village residents participated as extras in the filming.
