TC Running Company

The One-Stop Shop for All Your Running Shoe Needs

I used to freeze back when I worked at a gas station. I would spend ages in the walk-in cooler, fastidiously labeling and shelving giant sodas and cans of beer for our provincial customers to enjoy during their drives to and fro.

Mechanically cooled air has a way of seeping into your joints. By the end of every shift I felt like some ancient specimen which scientists had exhumed from the permafrost. Creaky and numb, I’d beeline to the bike path where I could run until I felt human again.

But I did not understand footwear when I first started running, and within miles my sorely underequipped sneakers turned my poor tootsies into props from a zombie movie. Had I known that one visit to TC Running Company could have spared this disfigurement … well, I would have visited TC Running Company.

“I love the freedom of running,” said Kurt Decker, the general manager of TC Running Company who is affectionately regarded as “The Godfather of Trail,” though his physique is a perfect inverse to that of a late-life Marlon Brando. “You don’t need a court. You don’t need a certain number of other people. So long as you have a pair of shoes, you can enjoy physically and mentally engaging exercise whenever you like.

“People use the term ‘runner’s high,’ and there truly is something to that.

“We’re a locally owned mom and pop shoe store, exclusively staffed by people who love their sport and want to share that passion with everyone who walks through our door. Thankfully, our customers really appreciate the difference that local retail represents.

“We cater to every runner here. Minneapolis and St. Paul are consistently ranked as two of the ten fittest cities in America, so we welcome a lot of ultra-runners into our store. These are people who regularly run more than 100 miles in a single day, so they need shoes that can keep up with them. But we get just as many folks who haven’t gone running since high school gym class – especially during the pandemic, when running became one of the few available pastimes people could still partake in – and need some help selecting the footwear that will let them enjoy their new hobby comfortably.

“Wherever you happen to be in your running journey, we’re going to make sure you walk out of TC Running with the right pair of shoes. We carry all the major brands here like Brooks, Saucony, Nike, HOKA and New Balance, as well as a lot of the smaller, specialty brands which focus more on making high-quality footwear than they do advertising. The sheer scale of our inventory can make navigating our store difficult, but no one’s better qualified to explain the difference between $60 and $120 running shoes than a member of our team.

“A great running shoe has resilient, impact resistant foam, as well as a durable yet breathable upper to prevent the kind of moisture that leads to blistering. However well-made a pair of running shoes might be, we still want to make sure they are a perfect fit for our customer. We work closely with you so we can understand your level of skill and running style, and even analyze your gait so your new pair of shoes helps you run as efficiently as possible. We don’t go into the same depth as, say, a physical therapist, but by observing how you jog on a treadmill we will make sure you leave TC Running with the best pair of shoes for your athletic ability!

“I’ve worked in the running business for 27 years now. How many other people are lucky enough to do something they love for that long?”
