NL: The Humane Society Naples Veterinary Clinic offers a wide range of services to keep pets healthy and happy. I didn't realize the Humane Society offered vet services.

HSN: Under the leadership of Medical Director Dr. John Morton, the Humane Society Naples Veterinary Clinic provides a full range of services for companion animals of all shapes and sizes, from big dogs to small reptiles. With state-of-the-art technology we are able to provide more than just the basics, though we are here for annual exams, vaccinations and preventatives as well. With a dedicated dental suite, we are able to make sure your best friend's mouth is in great shape. And we have a full-time veterinary surgeon who can almost any surgical need should it arise. Our team of more than 20 veterinary professionals, including five veterinarians, is experienced, knowledgeable and compassionate. We know that how scary and stressful it can be when your pet isn't feeling well. And we are here to make their journey back to wellness safe and easy for everyone involved.

NL:  Bringing a pet to your clinic is one way to support HSN and its mission while receiving top-notch veterinary care for your pet. What are some other ways our readers can help support your good work?

HSN: There are so many ways to support Humane Society Naples and our life-saving work. Of course, the simplest way is through a monetary donation. Our work relies entirely on community support, so we can't do our work without the generosity of people in Collier County and beyond. To donate to HSN please visit hsnaples.org/donate. People donate money to us in many ways: by check or credit card, through workplace campaigns, by hosting events, by leaving HSN in their estate plan and attending our signature fundraising events. This year we will be hosting our first major event of the year at Baker Park on November 19. For more information on that event simply go to hsnaples.org/party.

Many people also donate pet food and supplies, which we use to stock our community pet food pantry. Any donation of food you provide is sent back out into the community to an animal in need. Our goal at HSN is to keep animals in loving homes rather than see them surrendered to the shelter. Sometimes a little bit of food assistance makes all the difference. For more information on the other supplies we need for shelter animals and to provide to the community go to hsnaples.org/more-ways-to-give/#wishlists.

COVID put our volunteer program on pause, but we hope to reopen to new volunteers in the fall of 2021. To stay up to date on how you can volunteer, visit hsnaples.org/volunteer. Volunteers must be at least 14 years old and passionate about our mission to save animal lives.

NL: What are a few warm-weather health and wellness tips for pet owners in Naples?

HSN: Heat provides the biggest risks to pets, especially those who spend time outdoors. Remember when you are on a walk to have water available for your pup and to make sure the path you are walking on isn't too hot. If the concrete or asphalt is too hot for you to walk barefoot, then it could cause damage to your dog's paws. Also make sure you do not leave your dog in a car in Florida. Not only is it against the law, but it also can be fatal.

If your dog spends much time outdoors make sure there is access to fresh water and shade at all times. Also be on the lookout for cane toads while on your walk. These toads are highly toxic to dogs. If your dog's mouth comes into contact with a cane toad, wash it out immediately and call your veterinarian.

NL: You're the expert. You have our attention! What else should we know about pet health or the HS?

HSN: The thing we want everyone to know about HSN is that we are so much more than just an animal shelter. While the core of our mission is to shelter animals in times of need and find them life-long homes, we are also working out in the community. We provide food assistance and medical care, thanks to our Paige Conery Mobile Veterinary Clinic, directly to families in the community who might not have access to care. We have a team of trained behaviorists ready to work with you on making sure your dog has the training he or she needs to be a happy part of your family. We want to make sure that every person in Collier County has access to animal companionship because we know the difference animals make in people's lives.
