Heather Junkin and her family opened Imagine That Art Studio in Lebanon in 2017, providing a destination for creativity and exploration through art. With an academic background in secondary education, Heather leads a staff of talented artists who help kids and adults of all ages and skills explore their own artistic talent. We caught up with this creative entrepreneur to talk about the importance of art for children and families.
What role can art play in relieving stress and fostering a sense of resilience in kids?
Many people reconnected with their own creativity while spending more time at home during the pandemic. Painting, drawing, and creating can be therapeutic, stress-relieving, and simply fun.
How can parents help foster a love of art to help support their kids?
The best thing that parents can do to foster a love of art in their children is to be supportive, provide the space and supplies they need, and show interest in their child's art. Art is for everyone. No matter if your child is introverted or extroverted, fostering a love of art is beneficial. Art can be done alone, is an excellent outlet for emotions, and certainly is a source of developing individuality and creative thought. Art can also be used to open doors socially. It establishes a common ground, allowing kids who may be very different to connect.
When people come to your studio, what do they gravitate to depending on their age range?
Kids 10 and under gravitate to our ceramic animals and superhero pieces while older children scan the walls for an appealing canvas design. Moms tend to focus on our selection of Christmas ceramics, and dads are likely to hover near our mugs and Star Wars themed pieces or check out the pottery wheels.
How does art help kids grow and learn beyond teaching them how to paint and draw?
Through painting, drawing, and creating, children learn to think and look at the world in new and innovative ways. Cultivating that creativity and originality in our children allow them to express themselves while learning new skills and having fun. Our motto at Imagine That Art Studio is "Be creative. Be you." Our studio provides opportunities for people to break free from normal routines, spend quality time together, and tap into their creative sides. And since art can also be messy, families can be creative together, but leave the cleanup to us.
Imagine That Art Studio is located at 1342 West Main St. Lebanon, TN.
