Men, keep reading. We're gonna talk about protecting those precious goods. On average, men use 6 personal care products each day. Did you know each of those products contains 10-40 ingredients, many of which are not regulated for use in personal care products? The biggest one being fragrance-perfume. Shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, hair products, sprays, lotions and shave creams, all contain fragrance as an "ingredient."
However is it really an ingredient? In fact, it is not. Fragrance is a blanket term that encompasses a whole slew of ingredients that do not require disclosure. In other words, they don't have to tell you what's in it!
How is this possible? While the FDA requires the list of ingredients under the Fair Packaging and Labeling ActExternal Link Disclaimer (FPLA), the law cannot be used to force a company to tell “trade secrets.” Fragrance and flavor formulas are complex mixtures of many different natural and synthetic chemical ingredients, and are the kinds of cosmetic components that are most likely to be “trade secrets." Which means they can put any combination of unregulated ingredients here and slap it on a label under "fragrance."
So many endocrine disrupters (aka hormone disruptors), such as phthalates, are included in this “unknown, undisclosed” ingredient labeled as “fragrance.” What is a Phthalate and why is it harmful? It is a plasticizer. Scientists have shown that phthalates can damage the female reproductive system, but it is the male reproductive system that appears to be more sensitive.
Men lets clean up your side of the sink with some safer swaps! Remember, don't just take the bottle's word for it, read the ingredients. Educate yourself on what's safe or not, and just say no to fragrance. There are plenty of nice smelling products that aren't harmful for your hormone system.
