Creating a line-up of fun at-home activities is...a lot.

Especially right now, when moms and dads around the country have experienced a marathon stretch of playing the role of parent, professional, teacher, chef, playmate, and entertainer. We're rounding out week 10 of quarantine and the creative well has run dry over here, my friends.

But that's not what a toddler eager and needing to play wants to hear.

As the country slowly shifts back to "normal", we're anticipating that still includes more time at home than we'd like - which feels especially hard during a season dedicated to childhood fun and exploring. Looking for a new activity to add to the mix? I'd like to introduce you to a cabin fever cure: bubble foam.

This super simple, two ingredient sensory play activity has barely any prep work and will keep busy little hands occupied for *at least* half an hour (#MomLifeWin). There are multiple recipes online, but in our house we stick to the basic creation below. It works great at the kitchen table but is even more fun outside where your kiddos can really get into it. Literally. Since this recipe uses bubble bath, it can safely become a more what we'll call "immersive" experience.

What You'll Need:

  • Bubble Bath
  • Water
  • Electric Mixer or Hand-Held Mixer
  • Mixing Bowl
  • Plastic Bin
  • Food Coloring (optional)

How to Make It:

  1. Grab your mixing bowl and pour in 1 part bubble bath for every 2 parts water. I typically stick with 1/4 cup bubble bath to 1/2 cup water, but you can absolutely create a bigger batch for a more extravagant experience.
  2. Whip up the mix using your electric or hand-held mixer. You'll want to keep going until you get a foamy consistency with stiff peaks. It typically takes 2-4 minutes.
  3. Add in a couple drops of food coloring. We've done blue and green batches and added plastic ocean toys, rainbow batches, monochromatic batches....you name it. This is also a nice opportunity to get your little ones involved in the process by letting them pick the color. (Just remember you'll need to make a new batch for each color.)
  4. Drop the foam in any plastic container, head outside, and you're good to go!
