Setting the Stage for Success

5 Men We Admire

1) Michael A. Anastasi, Vice President & Editor, The Tennessean

Regional Editor, USA TODAY Network South

Tennessee | Alabama | Mississippi | Louisiana | Arkansas

How's business faring since the pandemic?

In March, The Tennessean saw record digital audience of just under 70 million page views and we are seeing extraordinarily strong demand for our content as readers seek accurate and trustworthy local news. We continue to grow digital subscribers especially. That said, the global economic blow is striking the advertising side of our industry very hard.

What's the most important thing to you in your work/business?

That we reflect a deep commitment to the communities we serve. That we make sure our readers know, understand and are equipped to solve community issues. That watchdog and investigative reporting remain the foundational pillar of what we do. That we reflect the good and beautiful things that happen in our communities, too.

To what do you attribute your success?

A relentless pursuit of excellence and believing in team.

What’s the best career advice you ever received?

Never underestimate the power of a smile.

2) Bryan Doleshel, Chief Community Development Officer, Williamson, Inc.

Vice President, Downtown Franklin Association

How's business faring since the pandemic?

Williamson, Inc. has been busier than ever working to connect the business community to the resources available. Fortunately, we’ve not skipped a beat and instead have continued to provide programming for our chamber members virtually. This past week we even celebrated a new business opening and hosted a virtual ribbon cutting.

What's the most important thing to you in your work/business?

People and relationships. I love being connected and love being able to connect others. As an employer, it’s very important to me to make a positive investment into my team. I want them to be challenged, supported and empowered through my leadership.

To what do you attribute your success?

I was raised to work hard and to value relationships along the way. I’ve always been one who is goal driven and strives to be as good as I can be in whatever I’m tasked with.

What's the best career advice you ever received?

Don’t follow the money. I learned early in my career that making a lot of money didn’t bring me fulfillment. It’s been a lot more rewarding to do what I enjoy and follow my passions.

3) Chad Ramsey, Owner, The Rowhouse Cool Springs  (by Brianna Melanson)

How is your business faring since the pandemic?
We continue to see interest in our studio. People have been hesitant to join because of the uncertainty, but we have certainly gotten some leads and prospects coming through since there has been an awareness of being active. We’ve been able to offer virtual workouts for people to do at home without any equipment and people have been really appreciative of that. The revenue we generate from memberships is certainly down. We hope to see the interest translate to people taking our classes once things settle down.

What is the most important thing to you in your business?
The people. That’s why we do it. It’s a way to engage with folks while getting the physical, mental and spiritual benefits of rowing. We have a saying that says, “We steer our crew to be the best versions of themselves. We are humble. We are kind. We leave no rower behind.” Our crew and staff are fully behind this message.

To what do you attribute your success?
Row House is true to the sport of rowing outdoors. The results of rowing are unparalleled. Rowing activates over 85% of the body’s muscles. Rowing also has such a rich history in the world and it's been part of the Olympics since the very beginning. We have this cardio-based high-intensity workout that’s low-impact which really opens the class up for a variety of people, such as someone with an injury. We offer a place for people of all
shapes and sizes and we can tailor a class to your abilities. Plus, the machines are more forgiving than being in a boat. You could be a collegiate rower sitting next to someone who hasn’t rowed in years. You get this really cool camaraderie in our classes.

What's the best career advice you ever received?
What comes to mind first is: “Don’t worry about who gets the credit, just worry about getting the job done.”

4) Matthew Kasiar, DMD

Franklin Dental Care

How's business faring since the pandemic?

Business has definitely slowed the past few weeks. Quite different than what we are used to for sure. We were open two days a week to see anyone with a dental emergency to help keep emergency rooms from getting bogged down.

What's the most important thing to you in your work/practice?

The most important thing to me in our practice is our team and our patient's safety. That will always be our number one priority. That’s why we have taken all measures during this pandemic to ensure their safety and to incorporate new safety protocols moving forward.

To what do you attribute your success?

Hard work and continuous support from my family.  Also, surround yourself with people who believe in you. Negativity can derail anyone’s goal of being successful.

What's the best career advice you ever received?

Never set limits on yourself. You can only achieve what you dream!

5) Nicky Mukerji, Executive Vice President, Uniik Company

How's business faring since the pandemic?

Being a part of the hospitality industry, we have seen a slowdown since the pandemic. Our industry is dependent upon personal and business travel and we estimate a continuing slowdown over the next few quarters.

What's the most important thing to you in your work/business?

Our business is built on recommendations and I value those more than anything else. Nothing gives me more satisfaction than a client who brings another, or a team member who recommends a colleague to our organization.

To what do you attribute your success?

There’s no easy path to success; it really has been an arduous journey of inspiration, perspiration, and team work.

What's the best career advice you ever received?

One of my earliest managers once gave me a simple piece of advice, which I still believe in - ‘It’s a career when you wake up each morning and look forward to the work day, otherwise it’s only a job!’
