Meyer's House of Sweets:

Unwrapping a Family Business

“I’m so glad I found you close by!”…“My wife has been enjoying your chocolates for years.” ...“Ohhh, those raspberry marshmallows.”

These are just a few of the comments you hear inside Meyer’s House of Sweets in Wyckoff. Scott Meyer and his wife, Cris, opened their store on Wyckoff Avenue in 2016 stemming from a family tree that includes three generations of chocolatiers. The original Meyer’s Luncheonette and Confectionary was opened by Scott’s grandfather in 1904 and was located on Bergen Avenue in Jersey City. It was the launch of a sweet line of establishments that have supported the Meyer clan for 115 years.

Meyer’s sister stores, Van Holten’s Homemade Chocolates, are operated by Scott’s three brothers in Lanoka Harbor, Brick and on the boardwalk at Seaside Heights, giving the family a north-to-south presence in the state of New Jersey.

Scott crafts his confections on the lower level of the Wyckoff store, creating his own special blends of both dark and milk chocolate and adding homemade ingredients like toffee, caramel, marshmallow, jellies and creams. Even the peanut butter cup filling is made by hand in the store. Cris answers the phone, greets customers, processes special orders and provides friendly, personalized service.

“Scott has always been in the chocolate business,” Cris says. “Working in a family business provides a support group. You always have help because we're a third-generation business. There’s no challenge that someone in the family hasn’t encountered, and we have that resource to draw from through Scott’s brothers.”

With 27 kinds of truffles alone, there is something for everyone at Meyer’s, including chocolate- and caramel-covered apples, chocolate-covered bacon, fudge, creams, melt-aways and peanut brittle. Scott’s special recipe for buttercrunch chocolate, infused with homemade toffee, leads in sales and is the most-requested item in the showcase.

As a destination spot to bring the kids for a treat, the store also is a go-to for holidays and all types of gift giving.

“Easter is our busiest holiday because most people like to put together baskets filled with candy and chocolate bunnies,” Cris says.

Sales spike the week prior to every holiday; however, different items are popular at different seasons. Christmastime sees a rise in the demand of chocolate assortment trays given as hostess, corporate and teachers’ gifts, and the store carries an array of chocolate greetings for every holiday and occasion.

“We have fun getting creative with customization as well,” Cris says.

Cris and Scott enjoyed a bit of hometown fame when a New Jersey Devils gift basket they created was posted on Instagram and picked up by the MSG network during a segment on Devils “fandom” and the basket was part of an ongoing ad that ran on MSG throughout the hockey season.

The antique chocolate molds and drinking glasses from the original store exude the charm of simpler times and the transcendence of a craft proudly handed down for generations.

“It’s definitely a labor of love,” Scott says.
