Celebrating its 14th anniversary this month, the Hot Dog Caboose in Midland Park is a family-focused destination that’s right on track!
Featuring pushcart-style Sabrett dogs, soups, chili, and homemade baked beans, the Caboose does not offer indoor seating but food can be ordered to-go or enjoyed “tailgating” in the parking lot. Picnic table seating is available as well.
“Spring and fall are the busiest times, but we get a lot of calls for soup and chili in the winter,” says Carol. “We have had many loyal customers over the last 14 years.”
Specialty hot dogs include the North Carolina Dog, topped with pulled pork and coleslaw; and the Taco Dog featuring corn chips, chili cheese, and jalapenos. Chicago Dogs come complete with yellow mustard, pickles, tomatoes, raw onion, and celery salt. Other favorites include Frito Pie and the Smashed Potato Cup: mashed potatoes topped with options including pulled pork, chili, and baked beans.
“Throughout the pandemic, people have been so appreciative to have a place to sit outside and eat on a nice day without being cooped up in their house,” says Carol. We have been working alongside the Wyckoff Helping Healthcare Heroes group to assist in providing food for frontline workers. We donate what we can, and they raise money to pay for the rest and provide delivery. I am so appreciative of their efforts to keep businesses afloat in this area. It’s an amazing idea to help everyone.”
The Caboose celebrates National Hot Dog Day on Wednesday, July 22 by donating 50 cents per hot dog sold that day to the Special Olympics in honor of Midland Park police officer, Chris Birch, who passed away several years ago.
“I love the small-town feel of it here,” says Carol.
