Warwick New York

Celebrate an Old Fashioned Holiday

Spend a day or weekend getting into the spirit of the season in Currier and Ives style.

Manhattan is usually the go-to, but how about a more peaceful and pastoral trip to the beautiful Hudson Valley? Pack up the car and head over the river and through the woods to Warwick, New York.

Mike Johndrow, Executive Director of the Warwick Valley Chamber of Commerce, is an avid fan of the Warwick Valley area, which comprises the New York villages of Warwick, Florida, Greenwood Lake, and Vernon, New Jersey. "I moved here from Sullivan County intending to stay temporarily and then move down south to retire," he says. "I love it so much here; I'm not going anywhere!"

"Warwick is an amazing location," he says. "Especially during the holidays. The Warwick Valley has so much to offer, and it's a great getaway for residents of Bergen County. There's so much to see and do, and we're only a 45-minute drive from Bergen County!"

Voted one of "The Best Weekend Getaways in America," Warwick is an easy, northwest car ride through Ringwood, Greenwood Lake, and West Milford; it's close by but a world away—whether you choose to make it a day trip or an overnight stay.

Known for its wide variety of dining options, Warwick has over 55 dining establishments in town. From five-star restaurants to small cafés, this town appeals to every palate and appetite. "There are another 125 eateries within a 10-mile radius of the town," says Mike.

The charming Village of Warwick is dog-friendly and easily walkable. A relaxing stroll down Main Street will lead you to a friendly retail shopping experience with clothing boutiques, home décor stores, unique artisan studios, and jewelry shops. "You won't see too many chain stores here," says Mike. "We promote our small businesses, and they all promote each other. Everyone is an ambassador of the Village. If one of our stores doesn't have what the customer wants, they will direct them on where they can get it."

December is a beautiful month to visit the Warwick Valley Region and get some holiday shopping done in a festive atmosphere. Each year, Warwick's Merchant Guild sponsors "Home for the Holidays" shopping throughout the weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Stroll the pine-laden streets, and check off your gift list while having a holiday experience of your own. There's free parking, too! If your kids are in tow, they'll want to hop on the free horse and wagon rides through Main Street. Choral groups will be caroling throughout town, and you'll have a chance to meet Santa!

A popular spot for antiquing, the Warwick Historical Society can provide a behind-the-scenes look at some of the town's oldest and renowned historic buildings. There are properties available to tour and walking tours throughout the Village which just celebrated 200+ years of incorporation. The Meeting House is a beautiful 19th-century church that is a cultural home for Village concerts and special events. Don't miss it!

If you need to stop for an afternoon break, visit Eddie's Roadhouse for a craft beer or The Blarney Station for an Irish stout. There are also several unique confectionary stores sprinkled throughout town if you prefer to tickle your sweet tooth. Stop by Charlotte's Tea Room if a cup of Earl Gray is what you need.

Make sure dinner plans are on the menu when you visit Warwick. Consider the newly-opened Stone House, which was built in 1793 and recently renovated to rave reviews. Other local favorites are Grappa, 14 Railroad, The Iron Forge Inn, and the Landmark Inn.

When you realize that you can't fit in everything you want to do in one day, consider stopping by one of Warwick's bed and breakfast establishments to arrange an overnight stay. The Stone House even has a newly renovated home you can rent for the whole gang or try Chateau Hathorn for dinner and a stay in one of their historic suites.

Spending a weekend in Warwick and the surrounding area will afford you the time to visit some of the 25 local wineries, distilleries, cideries, and breweries, hike a portion of the Appalachian Trail, or ski Mount Peter or Vernon Valley, which is only 8 miles away.

Want to plan a visit? Mike's office is in a 125- year-old caboose along the railroad tracks in town. Give him a call and stop in for a visit on a weekday to learn about all there is to do or check out  http://www.warwickcc.org/
