New Year's Resolution to Get Fit?

Orangetheory Fitness Success Based on Science, Coaching, Technology - and Fun!

Was one of your New Year’s resolutions to get more physically fit, but don’t know where to start?

I spoke with two coaches at Orangetheory Fitness Moore—one male, one female—to learn a bit about their own fitness journeys, and to find out why they think Orangetheory, a heart-rate based HITT (High-Intensity Tactical Training), total-body group workout that combines science, coaching and technology, is so effective.

Orangetheory’s coaches guide members through five different heart rate zones: resting, easy, challenging, uncomfortable and All Out, telling you when to push harder and when to pull back for recovery. The goal is to spend 12 minutes or more with your heart rate elevated in “The Orange Zone” to boost your metabolism, burn fat and burn more calories.

What is not mentioned in the above descriptor, according to the two coaches, is that a fitness program must also be enjoyable, or you won’t stick with it, and it must evolve as your needs and desires change over time. Orangetheory offers both, they say.

Kyle Dake

Age:

Education: Studied biology at University of Central Oklahoma

Kyle Dake, who grew up as a student-athlete, has been in the fitness industry for over 10 years. A  certified personal trainer, he has helped many clients reach their goals over that time period.

“My philosophy on health and fitness is ‘make time for your health or you'll be forced to make time for it later.’ In my experience over the last decade plus, the most consistent form of exercise and nutrition is what you enjoy doing. If you don't like it. then you're more than likely not going to do it very long. Fitness has to be fun, and food has to taste good!”

During his four years as an Orangetheory Fitness coach, Kyle has coached all fitness levels and ages, from the 15-year-old high school athlete to the 75-year-old client that wants to stay active and healthy.

“It's really a place for anyone in an energetic, fun atmosphere with the best personal trainers in your back pocket to make sure you're getting the most out of your hour,” Kyle says. “The biggest part for me right now is not only the physical fitness aspect of it during these extremely hard times, but also the mental healthiness that goes along with our community and support. Fitness is not all about what is happening on the outside of the body, but what's happening in the brain as well!”

Kyle recently started a four-week nutrition and exercise program at kyledakefit.com/four. Follow him on Instagram (@thekyledake), Facebook (Kyle Dake) and Facebook Business (thekyledake).

Kyle is a father to Colin, husband to Sabra and “pawrent to two wonderful pomskies.” When he's not helping individuals live a healthier lifestyle, Kyle enjoys all outdoor activities and spending time with his family.

Alyssie Edie

Age: 28

Education: Bachelor’s degree in exercise science

Certification: ACE certified personal trainer; National Academy of Sports Medicine

Alyssia Edie began working for Orangetheory Moore in November 2016, even before it was housed in its current facilities. In her four years with OTF, she has done a little bit of everything, from signing up members, to listening to them voice their goals (and helping them attain some of them), to watching them change their lives for the better.

At the same time, she says, “the members at OTF Moore have watched me grow—in my life, in my family, in my fitness. Anyone you ask will tell you OTF Moore is something special, and our community is something special. You will never feel alone, you will never feel outcasted, your goals are our goals. It’s a safe place where you can escape for a while at your lowest, your highest and for whatever goals you want.”

“I was a college athlete, division 3 women’s Lacrosse at Montclair State University, and through my athletic career, I suffered a few injuries which ignited my interest in the human bodies’ ability to heal, change and grow,” she recalls. “As an adolescent, sports were an outlet for school, home, emotions, changes, etc. However, post-athlete life hits EVERYONE, athlete or not... when practices ended and alarms weren’t mandatory, it became a decision of behavior for me. Don’t get me wrong; some months are less consistent than others, but exercise, activity and workouts at OTF have shaped my past, present and future for the better.

“Throughout my education and life experiences, one thing has been very apparent, both scientifically and realistically, in my life... if you work out, exercise, move your body in some way, you will in fact feel better over time, if not immediately,” she continued.

“My philosophy on exercise is simple: show up. If you do, before you know it, it will be part of who you are, and it will impact your life in good ways. As I’ve grown as a woman, my fitness journey has changed; just like our members, what used to be a workout focused on a glute hamstring tie or bicep growth is now focused on longevity of life. The focus is now to be able to lift my boys—Hudson, 4, and Hazen, 3—to hike with them, to be able to watch their lives as I grow older.”

When she’s not at work or with husband Heath and/or their boys and other family, Alyssia enjoys “traveling, trying new things and the occasional Netflix binge.” She moved to Oklahoma from New Jersey in 2015 to pursue a master’s degree and begin 1v1 training.
