Forget Blueprints; 'Walk Through' Your New Home Before Building Begins

Building a home is likely the biggest financial decision you will make in your life. It’s also a decision that you will have to, literally, live with for a long time.

When pulling together the details of your new digs with a custom home designer, you’ll want to make sure that every detail is carefully worked out for proper flow, natural lighting, maximum efficiency, desired aesthetics—and even that it meets “feng shui” guidelines, if that’s your thing.

Proper planning also includes such details as ensuring that your pantry door won’t swing out and hit the refrigerator and rooms are large enough to accommodate your needs. For example, what if that custom couch that you thought would fit in your living room actually ends up sticking out into the main walkway?

With Projected Plans, you can save time and money by having these problems eliminated by conducting a “walk through” of your new home before building begins. I spoke with Brian Porch, owner of Norman Heating, Air Conditioning and Plumbing, about his new business, Projected Plans, and found out how this state-of-the-art technology can bring your floor plans to life.

When did you start this company and where did you get the idea?

September 2020. There are similar businesses in Australia. It was on Shark Tank Australia. We have only found two similar companies in the United States: in Pittsburgh and Orlando.

Can you briefly describe the technology involved?

We use multiple projectors, all programmed and set up to work together to make one very large projection screen and one large projector on the wall. Then we scale the blueprints so they are projected out on the floor or wall on a one-to-one scale or actual life size.

I understand that by using projected plans, soon-to-be homeowners can save money and time. Can you explain in some detail why this is?

Once they approve their plan, the builder will charge a lot of money to make changes. It also causes delays when changes are made. A lot of people cannot visualize what they are building from a piece of paper, and once building starts, they see things in actual size and want to make expensive changes, or the house gets completed and they move in wishing they would have changed some things about the house.

What kind of response have you received?

Everyone who has toured our facility has just raved about how amazing it is to see it all lit up on the floor in life size. It is a very visual experience. Everyone gets their phone out and starts taking videos and pictures.

What sorts of issues do people find going this route as opposed to simply looking over blueprints or architecture renderings?

They find a lot they just can't see on the prints. We have had clients move windows, move walls, make rooms bigger or smaller. They have found their furniture was not going to fit in some of the rooms the way they thought it would. This has allowed them to correct these issues with their designer. For example, one of our clients, John Prater, after his walk-through said, “We noticed something that we had overlooked on the paper plans. Brian and his team were extremely helpful. I would recommend everyone doing this if you are able.”
