Wags to Riches

Fundraiser to Benefit Second Chance Animal Sanctuary

Attention, animal lovers! Second Chance Animal Sanctuary (SecondChanceofNorman.com) in Norman is hosting a brand-new event this fall to raise much-needed funds for the nonprofit. Called “Wags to Riches,” the event is set from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27, at The Railhouse in Norman. The evening will feature a cash bar, raffles, a catered dinner by Countdown Events, and entertainment by guitarist Jerry West.

For over 30 years, Second Chance has been serving the community by doing their best to give dogs and cats a “second chance.” While the organization does a tremendous job getting animals ready for adoption and fostering those that come in from all over the state, they don’t receive any city, state or federal funds, and these expenses push their budget to the limit. Additionally, their current building is in desperate need of repair. The board has discussed starting a capital campaign, but for now they are hoping the community will step up and get involved through the upcoming event and other giving opportunities.

About Second Chance

In the short term, Second Chance’s priority is finding homes for as many dogs and cats as possible. They also strive to prevent the overcrowding of shelters caused by a lack of education on the importance of spaying and neutering. They accomplish this through community outreach and hands-on involvement. Second Chance also transports a van full of animals for spay/neuter weekly. With rising gas prices, monetary donations are needed more than ever.

“Second Chance ensures that every donated dollar is spent wisely. The community’s support is appreciated in pursuit of reaching short- and long-term goals,” said Amy Boaldin, Second Chance Animal Sanctuary board president.

Long-term goals, which require larger financial investments, include building maintenance projects, such as installing a water hose connector to the back of the facility and installing a gate at the entrance of the parking lot to deter overnight abandonments. Additionally, Second Chance believes in building the capacity of the organization through investments in staff training.

Currently, about 60 animals are available for adoption. Second Chance averages between 60-80 adoptions per month, with 2021 seeing some 850 animals placed with new families, including approximately 280 cats and kittens and 561 dogs and puppies.

All dogs and cats placed for adoption have been spayed/neutered, vaccinated against rabies and Bordetella, had a heartworm test, been treated for fleas and ticks, and microchipped (also, cats are tested for FIV/FeLV).

In addition to monetary contributions, individuals and groups are encouraged to support Second Chance through service as volunteers. The nonprofit has an Amazon wish list link on their website for those who would like to purchase specific needed items. They also host an active Facebook page for those interested in fostering or supporting the nonprofit in other ways. Donations of pet food and supplies also are welcomed by the organization.

Please consider making a gift to this worthy organization, or volunteer some of your time to help them out. And don’t forget the mark your calendar for Wags to Riches!
