So much of great cuisine in the South Orlando brunch category, that we have weeks on end on our calendar to try them all! (We are not complaining!) And when we asked you - our fascinating community - you were quick to let us know of your all time instagrammable favorites! And the winner is...SLATE in Dr. Phillips, whom, I am sure you noticed, is also our featured cover. Followed by (in no particular ranking order) American Social, Hampton Social, Cafe Tu Tu Tango, Chroma, and House of Blues.
SLATE - 8323 W. Sand Lake Rd.
We simply had to check things out, and see what the fuss was all about. And, boy, did you get it right! One plate after the other was prettier than the next. Cameras, lenses, and all social media, definitely eat before any humans, and the tastebuds play is like a fun, yet classy trapeze artistry in a circus. You are in for an experience that we highly recommend! In fact, we had an opportunity to hang out with Executive Chef Kevan Ho, and here is what he shared. @slateorlando
Chef, share the core of your menu inspirations?
"First, I pair my menu with our restaurant aesthetics. We are Modern American, and we like to play with culinary ambiguity, as America is a melting pot. Here you will find Southwestern Cuisine, just as easy as colorful Hawaiian fare; yet our focus is Southern to pay homage to our location, and then build up from there. For instance, our French Toast is a head nod to Bananas Foster with an Orange Caramel and Banana Mousse, with fig and almond on the side for texture."
Highlight a favorite and popular brunch item for us?
"Ohhh...our Brisket Benny is made with a pulled brisket that lives in our dinner menu. We braze it down a bit more, and then make a Chipotle Hollandaise over the top with fresh chives as a garnish. By the way, our patrons love the mystery behind a weekly new flavored jam for our buttermilk biscuits, as well as a fresh batch of fluffy, yet crunchy pancakes with weekly flavored toppings." (Publisher's note - during our tasting, flavors of the week were Carrot Jam and Amaretto Pancakes with a Pistachio Crunch glacee. We can still taste the yummm!)
How about some cool facts about you?
"I am 29 years old and have been cooking since I was 15. I am from Antigua. With Eric Clapton in my island, I connected with him and became his personal chef, up to the time the pandemic started."
