A modern, elegant Autumn Tablescape

Expert tips from interior designer Leonidas Phillips

For homeowners Travis Morris and John Montenegro, entertaining friends and family is an important part of their lives. So, with the holidays approaching, the timing was perfect for Leonidas Phillips, the interior designer who helped create the welcoming vibe of their home, to offer some expert tips on creating an autumn “tablescape” that’s perfect for Thanksgiving dinner.

“Warm colors and soft, natural textures that you can see, as well as feel, tend to make people think about autumn,” said Phillips, owner of Leonidas Design Studio. “Travis and John have a beautiful hand-crafted wood table, which I didn’t want to cover. It provided the perfect backdrop for fall-like accents, like the natural-looking faux feathers in the centerpiece and the brassy finish of the candle holders. Then we simply added a few accents to complete the look without overwhelming it, like the knotted rope decoration and the velvet pumpkins.”

Another consideration was that the feel of the “tablescape” had to flow with the rest of Phillips' interior design. Upon first meeting with Morris, who is from North Carolina, and Montenegro, from Canada, she had learned that their vision for the home was to have it reflect their distinct backgrounds in a way that tied together seamlessly. Because Phillips had created the look and feel of the home, she was able to draw on their original inspiration.

“I immediately got excited once I started learning their tastes and personal preferences, and the vision they shared with me,” she added. “I also drew inspiration from the neighborhood, which is an established community with plenty of lush, green landscaping. It seemed to favor clean, straight lines and open sightlines to the windows and the outside views.”
