Marathon Training for Beginners

Gilbert Couple embraces the marathon life and shares passion through their podcast

People who run marathons are typically a devoted and intense group of athletes. But what about those who are just starting out in the sport? Valley natives and husband and wife team, Harrison and Mo Crumm took up marathoning last year when Harrison’s mother, Roxanne “Roxy” Crumm died unexpectedly. His mother had been an avid marathon runner earlier in her life and the Crumms took up running in her honor.

Harrison’s mother passed away on his birthday, June 19, 2019. “She had been a runner 15 or 20 years ago when the Rock ‘n’ Roll Arizona Marathon first came to Phoenix and she did it back then,” says Harrison who lives in Gilbert with Mo and their two young children. “She did the half marathon. She also went to Nashville and did another one and caught the running bug. Then life happened and she stopped running for a while.” Before Roxy passed, she was getting ready to return to marathoning and began training with Harrison.

After his mother passed, Harrison was going through her calendar and saw her notes about the upcoming half marathon for which she had been training. Harrison took it as a sign. “I decided I was going to run her half and then run my half. I did the whole marathon and I’m not even a runner,” explains Harrison. “I trained really hard for six months and ran that marathon.”

“Mo saw my journey and she was inspired,” continues Harrison who ultimately found a way to share the couple’s marathon journey. “I enjoy talking and so we started a podcast and Mo was 100 percent on board. We’ve had one of the most successful podcasts!”

Harrison and Mo share their passion, encouragement and good information about the world of marathons through their “Marathon Training for Beginners” podcast. “We follow our journey from a beginner’s level,” says Harrison. “People have a hard time relating to a lot of running podcasters and I know this because I was in the exact same place when I first started training. They’re all ex-Olympians or collegiate runners or have a high level of expertise.” The duo takes a fun and relatable approach to marathoning with their podcast. They share information, talk about the marathon community members they meet along the way and the struggles they encounter.

“The feedback has been phenomenal!” explains Mo Crumm. “There have been people all over the world who’ve connected with us. They say they can relate to us. They’re cheering for us and they share the impact that running has had on their physical, emotional and mental health. We all connect over this love and passion for running.”

In addition to continuing to grow their podcast, the Crumms are looking forward to more marathons. “The immediate plan is to do the Sprouts Mesa Marathon in February and then we’re hoping to do the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon in Nashville, and we’ll run the full marathon.” In longer term goals, they want to run a marathon in every state.

The Crumms love Gilbert and embrace the town as a great place for their family. “Gilbert has a vibrant community, and everyone is so kind and friendly,” Mo finishes. “Everyone has their own background and experiences, too. It’s cool to live in a diverse area where we feel safe, secure and comfortable.”
