Celebrate National Thank You Letter Day on Nov. 14

The Day, Which Celebrates Kindness and Manners, Was Founded by Carew Papritz of Arizona

Several years ago, Carew Papritz of Arizona was reading a chapter from his book The Legacy Letters to a group of fourth graders about how to say please and thank you when he had an epiphany—there should be a day devoted each year to writing thank you letters.

Shortly thereafter, Papritz founded National Thank You Letter Day, which is now celebrated every year on Nov. 14.

The day is devoted to celebrating what Papritz calls “the timeless values” of kindness and manners, as well as civility and gratitude—all through the relatively simple act of writing a thank you letter by hand.

Sure, you could always send a quick text or email, but to really make it personal and memorable, nothing beats putting pen to paper—even if it’s just a couple of lines.

“National Thank You Letter Day is to remind us of the simple and powerful act of sending a letter of thanks to someone we care about or love who has affected our lives,” it notes on the official website, NationalThankYouLetterDay.com.

For people who wish to take part in National Thank You Letter Day, Papritz offers a number of suggestions:

  • Write a thank you letter to someone in the family or a close friend that you would like to thank for any reason, no matter how big or small.
  • Send a letter to someone in the military to thank him or her for their service.
  • Write to someone in the community who you admire and/or who has helped you or someone you know.
