Flooring at Your Fingertips

At The Floor Store, What Customers Want is Typically in Stock - So Projects Get Done Fast

Robbie Bolt, general manager of The Floor Store, has worked in flooring for nearly 20 years, as an estimator, salesman, sales manager, and territory manager. During that time, he visited a lot of flooring showrooms – and he was making mental notes.

“I’ve been in everyone’s showroom in Central Virginia,” he said. “I saw what worked and things I didn’t like.”

Those mental notes became reality this past February, when Bolt opened The Floor Store showroom at 1281 Carmia Way. Custom designed by Bolt, the showroom combines the best and eliminates the rest.

“So many flooring showrooms look like outlets,” said Bolt, who has seen his share of untidy, unappealing floor stores. By contrast, Bolt’s showroom is large, well-lit, and very organized.

Customers are greeted by knowledgeable associates at a reception and consultation area. Beyond, customers can go left to browse giant rolls of neutral-toned carpet, straight ahead to peruse hard flooring options showcased on custom-made elevated presentation tables, or go right to meander through a selection of sample boards sorted by type.

One thing Bolt knew he wanted was enough space to have popular brands and styles in stock. In addition to the carpet rolls that fill the entire left wall of the showroom, hard flooring is stacked in boxes underneath the elevated presentation tables, and a warehouse in back offers additional storage space, plus a loading dock.

Customers who hate to hear, “We’ll order that for you and it’ll be here in two weeks,” are apt to be pleased at The Floor Store. “Most showrooms just show you samples,” Bolt said. “We buy in bulk so that we have many of the most popular products in stock. Buying in bulk also allows us to offer lower prices.”

Customers get to see products in sizes that help them visualize the flooring in their homes. Carpet buyers can see the color and feel the texture on the roll, giving them a much better sense than they’d get from a swatch or a sample on a display board. “This is your carpet,” Bolt said. “We’re going to cut it for you.”

Similarly, customers looking for hard flooring walk through 4-foot by 4-foot displays that show a full 16 square feet of flooring. (Small take-home samples are also available, neatly labeled and stored in a side room.)

A special feature is the Room Visualizer, available on The Floor Store’s website. The visualizer allows customers to upload a photo of their room, select a flooring, and see how it would look in their home. “It’s a great tool, especially when customers want to spend less time shopping around town,” Bolt said.

Waterproof flooring is the store’s most popular product right now. “It’s the closest thing to a bulletproof floor,” Bolt said. For this reason, customers are requesting it not only for traditionally damp rooms like kitchens and baths, but also for living and family rooms.

This month, Bolt expects to debut his own premium Floor Store brand of luxury waterproof flooring, with prices starting as low as $1.99 a square foot. Available in eight custom colors, the Floor Store brand is perfect for customers “who want something nice at a lower price point,” Bolt said. The new Floor Store brand will offer customers an alternative to the current $2.78 per square foot product, which “sells like crazy.”

Because so many products are kept in stock, customers often can get their new floors fully installed in a matter of days, using Floor Store contract installers. This in-stock approach also appeals to do-it-yourselfers, who can pick out products and related installation supplies and walk out with everything they need for a weekend DIY project.

“Customers can get their project done much faster with us,” Bolt said.
