Matt’s love for song lyrics was cultivated at an early age.

"There was always music in my house. My dad was the biggest influence on my music because he was such a fan of American rock musicians like Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, The Eagles, and Jackson Brown. I remember being six-years-old and my dad explaining to me why Bruce Springsteen's "Dancing in the Dark" was such a good lyric. My ear was trained to listen to the words before I learned to listen to the music."

Matt started taking music seriously in college.

"Just for fun, I would throw some songs on Facebook and YouTube. I started getting good feedback." He entered a lyric content in American Song Writer, a national publication. "I got third place. I submitted another one and got fourth place. After that, I was writing and playing guitar in my room every day."

Making the move to Nashville.

"I wanted to take music seriously, so I pulled the trigger and moved to Nashville. I majored in business at Belmont University and graduated with a degree in entrepreneurship. When I wasn't in class, I spent my afternoons and evenings co-writing music, recording, and performing in writers' rounds – all the stuff you do in Nashville. I submitted another song for the American Song Writer contest, and I won. I was like, 'I'm set. I'm going to make it.' I was this naïve 19-year-old kid.  Obviously, it's not that easy."

Following a dream and starting a family.

Matt and his wife Jenna love Nashville, but decided to live local.

"We are both close to our families in St. Louis and we knew we wanted to raise our family here. It's great to have such a supportive family. It means everything to me that my wife, my parents, and my wife's parents love me and encourage me because it's a long road. You need people in your corner to push you along."  After the birth of their daughter Matt's wife encouraged him to keep performing. "I realized that I can be a present father and husband and still pursue my dream. It just took a little bit to figure that out."

Not the naïve teenager anymore, Matt knows making a career in music a longshot.

"The music is the product. Everything else is the business. My business degree in Entrepreneurship taught me how to solve problems in creative and innovative ways. The problem that I'm solving in the music world is how to stand out from the crowd."

Matt defines his music as contemporary country inspired by American rock.

"I lean more toward Bruce Springsteen and John Mellencamp sonically."

Matt's is releasing new music every six weeks on Spotify, and his song "Runaway Heart" was named Rolling Stone Magazine's Country Music Pick for the Week for January 26th, 2021.

"The last year has really exceeded my expectations. We've gone from 1,800 monthly listeners on Spotify to over 48,000 in less than a year.  We are getting traction, and the momentum is good. There are big names that come through Delmar Hall and Old Rock House. I have no doubt we could bring 200 people to those places. We put on a great live show, and we bring people out."
