“Home isn't where you're from, it's where you find light when all grows dark.” ― Pierce Brown, "Golden Son"

Mid-19th century poet Ralph Waldo Emerson famously wrote:  "A house is made with walls and beams; a home is built with love and dreams." As we celebrate in this March edition where we live, here are three books to enjoy while nestling into your special place called home.

Before We Were Yours by Lisa Wingate (2017): “I learned that you need not be born into a family to be loved by one.” This is an emotional read. The characters are fictional but the storyline is very real. The book follows the interwoven storylines of Avery Stafford, a lawyer from a prominent South Carolina family, and Rill Foss, the eldest of five children who were taken from their parents’ boat by an unscrupulous children’s home in the 1930s. At the mercy of the facility's real-life director, Rill fights to keep her sisters and brother together.

Where The Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens (2018): The story follows two timelines that slowly intertwine. The first describes the life and adventures of a young girl named Kya as she grows up isolated in the marsh of North Carolina from 1952–1969. The second timeline follows a murder investigation of Chase Andrews, a local celebrity of Barkley Cove, a fictional coastal town of North Carolina.

Sunflower Sisters by Martha Hall Kelly (2021): For those who enjoyed Lilac Girls, Martha Hall Kelly's Sunflower Sisters provides a vivid, detailed look at the Civil War experience, from plantations to a war-torn New York City to the horrors of the battlefield. It's a sweeping story of women caught in a country on the brink of collapse.
