What Would You Tell Your Younger Self?

Three Boerne Women Share Their Wise Words

KIRSTEN COHOON, 451ST DISTRICT COURT JUDGE

As a child, we moved constantly. I would tell my younger self not to dread each move. Make new friends and keep in touch with those friends when you move again. I would stress that you do not need to look to others for approval; you are good enough. I would try to convince myself to find a church home with each new move and get connected. I would remind myself that life is bigger than right now. Study hard and have fun - preferably in that order!

AMY STORY, PRESIDENT/CEO, BKCEDC

Don’t sweat the small stuff.  Focus on the big picture. Don't give minor irritations more weight than they deserve. Do things outside of your comfort zone.  It provides a great sense of accomplishment to push yourself to do something you thought impossible. Align yourself with people who bring out the best in you and them.  They will hold you accountable and are the ones who will be there through good times and bad. Always have a Plan B. Don’t focus on regret, but on the future.  Every experience helps shape you into the person you become. Do the best that you can do.

NICOLE BISHOP, DISTRICT ATTORNEY

You don’t know everything and you can be wrong. Seek out the opinion of others. Learn to take criticism. Receive it, consider it and, if necessary, adjust accordingly. If you can’t admit your mistakes, you’ll keep making them. In all relationships, be yourself and set boundaries. Never compromise yourself for the approval, acceptance or love of others. When people dismiss, disrespect, or mistreat you, it says more about them than you. Stay firm in who you are, treat them with grace, and move on. Finally, God really does have a plan for you, and your determination, honesty, faith, and kindness will keep you on the right path.
