Giving Thanks

Local residents share what means most

Name: Kristen Webb and David Schooler, Bellevue resident since 1983

Day job: David is Chairman of the Board for Sterling Realty Organization.

Side hustle, passion project or hobby? David and I have been sewing up cloth face masks this year.  I’ve rediscovered my love of sewing.  We’ve made about 200 face masks for friends and family.

For many, November as a time to give thanks. Do You take part in any particular celebrations or traditions?

Our family started a new tradition of steakhouse Thanksgiving with an oven roasted tenderloin (thank you Ina Garten), homemade onion rings, garlic broccoli, scalloped potatoes and apple crisp for dessert.

2020 has been a wild ride, if you had to choose someone or something to thank in 2020 who or what would it be?

We are thankful for our family and friends.

How do you express gratitude or thankfulness?

We began weekly Zoom calls with dear friends and with another friend we created patio potlucks out in the fresh air.  In March, we wrapped up in blankets on our friend’s covered patio for our first potluck.

Is there anything uniquely “Bellevue” that you would like to thank?

Lots of open space in the city’s network of parks especially the downtown park and newly created Meydenbauer Bay park.

Name: Tara Patel, Eastside resident

Day Job: Entrepreneur

Side hustle, passion project or hobby? Luxury travel to near and far and creating curated travel itineraries for friends and family. Travel enriches my soul and allows me to follow my other passion, travel photography.

For many, November is a time to give thanks.  Do you take part in any particular celebrations or traditions? Our family celebrates Friendsgiving on Camano Island. We are all from various parts of the world and each one of us enjoys food and travel stories. Besides watching football after a heavy meal, we also never miss out on a long hike with friends before the meal.

2020 has been a wild ride, if you had to choose someone or something to thank in 2020 who or what would it be?

We sat on a hill in Patagonia, Chile, admiring the Torres Del Paine peak, saying goodbye to 2019 and welcoming the New Year. Who knew, that very soon my travel life would be turned upside down, along with everyone’s sense of normalcy. 2020 has allowed our family to spend more time together. I am the most thankful for my husband, children, my dear friends, and good health.

How do you express gratitude or thankfulness?

A simple thank you note to someone or just being there for someone when they need you the most. Showing up! I maintain a gratitude journal and sincerely believe in the power of being thankful for the small as well as the bigger things and/or people who make my life beautiful in their own special ways.

Is there anything uniquely “Bellevue” that you would like to thank?

Bellevue to me is resourceful— be it art, culture, shopping, education, community, nature, career. A perfect mix! It’s a good anchor for an urban soul.
