Ciara Dumont was born with an entrepreneurial spirit. By four, she was running the family tag sale, and when she wasn’t playing “store,” her favorite game was Monopoly. It makes sense then that, when she later yearned for a job she could wrap around her impossible schedule as a student and a single mom, this thirty-something launched her own business.

“It sounds crazy,” laughed Dumont, a licensed esthetician who specializes in skin and lashes. “You don’t usually start a business with no money and because you need more freedom, but it was really the only way I could start something for myself.”

Dumont’s gutsy decision led to Glow, an Elm Street salon nested above Mama Cakes and Two Rivers Burrito. At first, “I thought it was just going to be me and I was just going to do lash extensions,” Dumont said. But when COVID-19 closed the nation two months after Glow’s debut, “It forced me to think outside the box; to think about what services I wanted to add.”

Today, Glow employs three additional practitioners in an expanded suite, and it offers a full complement of accessory services including nails, facials, dermaplaning, brow lamination, lash extensions, waxing, teen acne treatments, and glycolic peels.

“I wanted to create a place where people could get all those services at one location,” Dumont explained. “I’ve always liked helping people feel better and look better, and we focus on the services that are really going to make a difference. I’m big into instant gratification. I want people to look into a mirror and be like, ‘This is amazing!’”

“People ask me what I like to do, and it sounds corny, but I like to go to work. It’s really fun for me. I’ve always loved working with people, and I do get a thrill out of running a business.”

“There’s a quote, ‘You don’t grow in your comfort zone.’ I’ve always been someone who wants to learn more, do more, get that next certification. If it’s not giving me nervous energy, I know it’s not something that’s going to take me to the next level,” she said.

And Glow is already rising. “We’ve grown exponentially. I had no idea this was going to happen so quickly,” Dumont said, adding her goal is to one day expand into a medi-spa.

“I work a lot and I work hard, but I love what I do,” this new business owner said. For her, the boons have been many. “I think downtown Westfield has a lot of potential that hasn’t been tapped into yet. I’ve met some really amazing people, and I’ve learned a lot about myself as far as my capability in taking a risk.”

“I’m really happy with the way Glow has turned out,” Dumont said, “but I’ve had a lot of support from my clients. I definitely have the best clients.”
