Grown-up Comfort Food

A weekend at Fort Gibson inspires a tasty sandwhich

Comfort food normally is brought to mind when reminiscing about a special era in your life. Can you remember as a child being ravenous after a sweltering day at the pool or running through the neighborhoods with friends until the street lights came on? Do you reminisce about an oasis in the desert after a night of margaritas and friends when you see a taco truck? All these things occur in our normal day-to-day lives without realizing how much comfort, love and relief we find in these foods. Here is a grown-up recipe after a weekend getaway with friends and family at Fort Gibson.

This grown-up French toast and Monte Cristo hybrid will become your new favorite comfort food.

The Fort Gibson

Ingredients:

French Brioche Bread

Dash of cinnamon

1 cup heavy whipping cream

1 cup milk

1/2 cup brown sugar

2 medium eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 medium tomato

8 slices provolone cheese

½ pound Dietz & Watson Honey Maple Turkey

½ pound Dietz & Watson Honey Ham

1 tablespoon powdered sugar for dusting

Directions:

1. In a large bowl mix cinnamon, eggs, whipping cream, milk, brown sugar and vanilla.
2. Dip bread into mixture on both sides, making sure the mixture is absorbed.

3. Place bread into frying pan with a pad of butter.

4. Cook on each side until golden brown (about 30 seconds on each side) and then flip.

5. Add one slice of cheese on each side as soon as it is flipped.

6. Add two slices of turkey, two slices of tomatoes and one slice of ham and remaining bread.

7. Using a sharp knife, cut the sandwich into triangles and dust with powdered sugar.
