Get Your Landscape Summer-Ready

Tips for a stress-fee start to a stunning lawn

Searching for the emerald green lawn of the golf course or simply trying to grow grass? For many, this is the battle that is waged all summer. Throwing some fertilizer or grass seed down isn’t going to get you where you want to go. Our expert says it works best with consistency. So hiring a company to do the heavy lifting and thinking for you might save you a few gray hairs. Still want to strike out on your own? Jacob Morrow of Frederick Landscaping has a few tips to get your summer landscape off to a great start.

1. Clean up

Remove leaves caught in plantings and dead or loose branches. Cut back ornamental grasses and plants. Prune Evergreen trees and plants; however, all others should be pruned in the Fall, and never prune more than a third of the plant or tree.

2. Mulch away

Apply three inches of mulch in the beds as well as around trees. You could also include pre-emergent weed control in the mulch to get ahead of those pesky weeds. Never pile mulch up around the trunk of the tree.

3. Get a baseline

Getting your lawn in top shape may seem like a mystery, but it's relatively simple. Start by taking a soil sample. A baseline shows if the soil's pH level is good and organic matter is adequate.  Amend the soil with whatever is indicated by the sample, or if the soil test good,  apply weed control.

4. Grow your grass

The easiest way to keep good, weed-free grass is to keep the grass nice and long. Longer grass shades out the weeds and prevents germination. Never cut the grass shorter than three inches and vary the pattern when mowing.

5. Watering

For established lawns, watering is unnecessary. It's natural for grass to go dormant and brown out in the summer. Don't worry. It will come back in the Fall. FrederickLandscaping.org
