As the calendar flips to April, it’s natural to want to get outside and enjoy everything spring offers. Trust us when we say our families will be right there alongside you. After all, it’s finally not too cold and not too hot. That said, summer is just around the corner, and at some point, we will need to head back inside and use the air conditioning a bit more frequently. If you want to ensure everything keeps working as usual, spring is the best time to do some HVAC maintenance.

The secret to ensuring your home’s HVAC system runs efficiently and keeps your family comfortable year-round is to do the little things now before those peak times of the year become too unruly. You should call your friendly neighborhood HVAC repair man to have your system professionally inspected, serviced, and cleaned. But there are also a few simple HVAC maintenance tips for spring that you can be doing in the meantime.

HVAC Maintenance Tips for Spring that Simply Make Sense

 1.   Change your air filters — Air filters have two jobs: keep your home’s air clean and safe and ensure critical airflow cycles to and from your air conditioner to keep your home comfortable. By this point, your air filters are likely clogged with all sorts of debris, thus causing your HVAC system to work harder than it should. Most air filter manufacturers like General Electric, Filtrete, HEPA, and Honeywell, and HVAC companies recommend changing your air filter every three months — and guess what, it’s about that time!

2.   Wash off your outdoor unit — Grass clippings, dirt, pet urine, leaves, landscaping, weeds, etc., can easily collect on fan blades and compromise other components. This prevents airflow and keeps the system from working efficiently. Hosing down your unit every so often and maintaining at least two feet of clear space around it is a great way to avoid unnecessary obstructions.

3.   Find and seal any air leaks — Your HVAC technician can point these out to you on a service call and even remedy a few of them for you. The bottom line is that even the tiniest gaps around windows, doors, and other openings allow precious cool air to escape and hot air to enter. Sealing these areas with caulk or weather stripping is one of the best HVAC maintenance tips for spring.

4.   Take a close look at your thermostat — Many HVAC issues start with the thermostat, either because it is outdated or no longer works correctly. Programmable and smart thermostats give homeowners in Argyle, TX, the ability to control their systems from anywhere while offering the ability to adapt to their schedule, track energy usage, and improve their system's efficiency. Consumer Reports came out with its top list of programmable thermostats here.

5.   Visually inspect the outdoor unit — No one expects you to be a certified HVAC technician. That said, homeowners should always visually inspect the outdoor unit to see if anything looks out of sorts (signs of damage, leaks, weird noises, etc.). If something looks or sounds off, create a list and call your HVAC tech.

6.   Have the ducts professionally cleaned — Spring is a great time to schedule a professional duct cleaning. This ensures your ducts are clear of obstructions, dust, mold, etc., and can work seamlessly with your HVAC system.

7.   Schedule preventative maintenance — The best HVAC maintenance tip for spring is to schedule preventative maintenance now rather than later. This is your chance to address small problems before they become expensive repairs later. The Indoor Air Quality Association lists these reasons why preventative maintenance is so important: prevent costly breakdowns, reduce energy bills, extend the life of your system, stay protected under warranty, improve your indoor air quality, improve your comfort, keep your home safer, help the environment, and give yourself greater peace of mind.
