Most homes have a family gathering space with a couch and a TV for lounging. But when Megan Gregoire, designer with Covenant Building & Design, first considered the family room at the new Covenant model home in the upscale RounTrey community, she had something more in mind.

The focal point in Gregoire’s room isn’t a fireplace or TV or artwork. It’s a bar.

“I wanted to make it appealing to the whole family, a room that incorporated elements that everyone can enjoy,” Gregoire said of the home at 3601 Graythorne Drive.

The bar occupies one wall and is virtually a room within a room, with its blue custom cabinetry, bold floral tile backsplash, built-in wine racks, display shelves, and brown-and-gray brick veneer flooring.

Underneath the quartz countertop is a refrigerator offering accessible snack and beverage storage, plus a sink, for convenient drink mixing and party cleanups. Cabinet storage extends to the ceiling to provide a home for barware and pantry items. Recessed lighting provides task illumination, and LED strip lighting sheds a glow to décor items on display shelving.

Elsewhere, there’s a couch and coffee table along with a flat-screen TV mounted on a wall finished with the same brick that’s used on the floor in the bar area. Tables provide more display space or spots for board games and books, plus a place to tuck a pair of ottomans for additional seating. (See photo, Table of Contents page.)

“Just have fun with it, with different textures and colors,” said Gregoire, who chose an iron-gray paint for door frames, in contrast to the white used on window frames. “Create a space that’s yours, that you would enjoy.”

1.       Eye-catching elements. The bar stools, for example, come from Green Front Furniture (Farmville). https://www.greenfront.com/

2.       Mixed metals. This is a new trend showing up in upscale homes. The black bar sink is accented by a faucet and fixtures in gold.

3.       Textural interest. Here, textures include woven rattan and sea grass window shades; the hardwood floor contrasts with the plush area rug.

4.       Color. Think beyond the usual neutrals. Go bold for a playful feel in a fun room.

5.       Personal touches. Here, these include a cocktail menu wall hanging and a framed quote from Blake Shelton’s country hit Honey Bee, “You’ll be my glass of wine, I’ll be your shot of whiskey."
