Lakeside ISR: Infant Swimming Resource Expert, Kristina Richie, Shares Top Swim-Safety Tips

Pool and beach season is here! However, with this comes risks – in fact, drowning is the number one cause of death for children under 5, and the second leading cause of death for children under 15, according to the CDC. Keep your children safe year-round with these water safety tips:
Use multiple layers of protection:
Constant supervision - always have an adult “water watcher.” No phones or conversations with others. Switch out every 15 minutes.
Install a pool fence.
Locks and alarms on doors/windows.
Don’t rely on flotation devices, enroll your child in high-quality swim lessons as early as possible.
Choose brightly colored bathing suits.
Remove pool toys after use.
Wear USCG-approved life jackets in open water.
Learn CPR.
When traveling:
Choose vacation rentals with pool fences.
Bring a personal pool alarm or stick-on door/window alarms.
Be aware of rip currents at the beach.

Sometimes layers can fail, which is why swim skills are crucial in preventing fatal drownings. Kristina Richie is a certified Infant Swimming Resource (ISR) instructor and owner of Lakeside ISR. Lakeside ISR offers Self-Rescue swim lessons for children ages 6 months through 6 years in Mount Juliet and Lebanon. For more water safety or lesson information, visit www.lakesideisr.com.
