Planting Seeds in People First

Building a Legacy that Stands on Community

As evidenced by census data (and home prices), scores of people have been drawn to Mt. Juliet over the past several years. Many have been attracted to the area for financial reasons but end up staying for other - less tangible and more meaningful - reasons. John Howard, owner of Lawns by Luke, was given an opportunity to move here by his past employer. "Little did I know at that time, the reason God brought me here was to form a landscape company.” Though not everybody views their paths with spiritual significance, John muses, "People say that each phase or job in your life is only a platform or steppingstone for something greater if you keep your steps guided by the Lord."

Let's rewind a bit. Though John Howard isn't from the area, he grew up in the south - on a large horse farm in Kentucky. And you can trace his love of the outdoors directly to this upbringing. "Being outdoors allows you to be productive, it brings clarity for me," he reflects. "It really is medicine for the soul." Given his passion and skills, it would appear to be a natural progression for John to start a landscaping company. But being perfectly suited to a certain path doesn't mean it's the easy choice to make - especially when a corporate job can provide security and stability. And so, it required a leap of faith - which John took in the form of purchasing a $12,000 lawn mower. His wife, Allison, was supportive (though skeptical).

Fast forward to today, and it's clear that it was a risk that paid off. John quickly picked up jobs mowing his neighbors' lawns and the rest is history. Lawns by Luke launched in 2017 and now specializes in premium landscape design and build services. “We really shine with enhancing someone's property through irrigation services and hardscape services (such as patios, fire pits, etc.).” His work on one of his client’s small yard projects has recently garnered some well-deserved attention and is a great example of the vast capabilities of the Lawns by Luke team. “Of course, we provide lawn maintenance for many commercial and residential clients as well." John has scaled wisely and has been careful not to overextend himself or his business, deciding to strategically focus on 3-4 services. “I think it's important to stay in your lane and be really good at something," he explains.

At this point in the story, one might be wondering why Lawns by Luke isn't Lawns by John. The business is a family affair. Luke is John's son, whom he credits with being the 'inspiration' behind the business. Luke is referred to as 'brand ambassador,’ which is a role he thrives in. "He takes great pride in being a part of something so special in a community in which he will grow up." And he's not the only family member that has a part to play. John describes, with much love and adoration, how Allison contributes. "She is ultimately responsible for being my support - emotionally, spiritually, and strategically. She is great at cultivating relationships and keeping the administrative obligations on point. We are far better organized because of her skills." Last, but certainly not least, his daughter, Samantha, is also involved in the family business. John beams, “She has shown me a level of love I didn't know existed and that motivates me to make this an even better place to be and work."

And that, he has. By investing in his business, John Howard has given the community something invaluable. "We have amazing clients and support in the community that drives us to give back and do even better. It has allowed us to be the best option for people wanting to improve their property or create a dream backyard they can enjoy. So many companies today are laser-focused on the bottom line. Revenues are very important, however, we've prioritized relationships and quality of service." When speaking with John, three things are abundantly clear- he loves his family, he loves his community, and he gives all the glory to God. God didn't just bring him here to create a landscape company - but an enduring example of how investing in oneself and one's family can serve the larger community. "It is our passion and joy to do this, and we are here to stay."
