Q: What do you love about Reno?

A: I love the easy access to world class recreation. The fact that I can walk out my door and be “lost” in minutes is such a gift. I love the light here. The way our sunrises bounce light off the mountains and our sunsets bathe the basin with warm light that changes with every season is amazing.

Q: Tell us something that might surprise our readers.

A: Ok, I said I liked riding bikes but that’s a little bit of an understatement. I was a professional cyclist for 10 years, won a Professional World Championship, 17 National Championships, and was incredibly fortunate to compete in two Olympics as a member of the US Olympic Team. I’m also in the US Cycling Hall of Fame.

  • The highlight of my cycling career was winning the professional world championship.
  • There's nothing better than representing your country.
  • Nothing like dinner with a view. Dinner Ledge, South Face of Washington Column, Yosemite.
  • Our dog Fritz in an uncharacteristically calm moment.
  • My amazing wife, Mara. Couldn't do it without her.
  • Mike McCarthy, Publisher
  • I'm not a chef but I play one in the backyard.
  • I am a proud member of the Alpine Meadows National Ski Patrol. There's no better feeling than helping people.
  • That trail? Take it. Anyone else like getting lost?
  • Will hike for turns! My littlest ripper ready to show me the way down to Green Creek.
  • Let's build a shed, he said. Nothing like a little weekend(s) building project.
