Roughly one hour from Fayette County situated in LaGrange is Nutwood Winery, a unique spot offering wine, food, music and more in a relaxing environment. Neil and Trish Liechty, along with their children Felicity and Silas Liechty own and operate the winery. This June marks their third anniversary since opening Nutwood Winery, a cause for celebration. “We never imagined we would be as busy as we are but we are so grateful for our customers,” Trish Liechty says. “We hope everyone who comes here enjoys our facility and wants to come back and bring friends.”
Upon arrival, guests are welcomed by the historic Greek Revival manor, built in 1833 by architect Collin Rogers. “The property makes you feel as though you have gone back in time,” Trish states. Keep an eye out for Roger’s signature medallion bird above the manor’s entrance and the cantilevered balcony. Today, The Liechty family is bringing modern amenities to guests while preserving the antiquity of this nationally recognized historic site. The winery itself was built using trees from the property. While Neil tends to the vineyard and grounds, Trish and her daughter make the wines. “We try to have something for everyone: sweet, dry, red and white with a little flare of the South in it.” They seek the best fruit and choose the ideal time to harvest. Through each glass of wine, they are giving a memorable experience. White muscadine, peach and butter pecan can be found on the menu, giving guests a true taste of Georgia.
The Liechty’s Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Franc Reserve are true delights. This full-bodied wine leaves a lasting impression not only on your palette but in your heart. You will find yourself buying bottles of this wine to enjoy at home. Their specialty wine is the Blackberry 36 aged in whiskey barrels. This wine is blended with Muscadine Moonshine which makes it a port-like, strong 36-proof wine. Once blended, the wine is aged in whiskey barrels for six months. If you aren’t ready to commit to a full glass of wine, order one of their remarkable tasting trees where you have a choice of five different wines. Each tree is towering with wine, an art piece in the most delicious form. Wine slushies are another go-to at Nutwood Winery. It’s a trademark that keeps people coming back. Flavors vary regularly, and once smoothly blended, create a unique frozen treat. “Our concept is a little different than your typical winery,” Trish says. “We wanted to make it a place to hang out with lounge areas as well as tables to sit and enjoy.” The family has created a beautiful outdoor ambiance, from the grounds to the patio. Rock away in the rocking chairs on the front porch or enjoy yard games out front. Inside you will find an exquisite wine bar with seating all around. The patio is beaming with essence and ambiance. On certain days guests will revel in live music. The café menu is full of appetizers and light bites, perfect to accompany any glass of wine. The fruit and cheese board and pork tenderloin sliders are just two of the many choices on the menu. The Amish chocolate peanut butter grilled cheese is a must-try, a unique treat at Nutwood Winery.
